In the quiet, tree lined fairways of Gowanda Country Club, where tradition meets a deep sense of community, one name continues to symbolize dedication, professionalism, and a genuine love for the game: Paul Agone, PGA. As the Western New York PGA comes together to celebrate this year’s WNY Classic, it is only fitting that Agone is being honored for his ongoing contributions to the game and to the generations of players he continues to inspire.
A PGA of America Certified Professional in Golf Operations, Agone exemplifies the highest standards of the profession. His journey in golf spans decades, marked by steady leadership, expert knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to the development of both the game and the people who love it.
Agone achieved Quarter Century Member status in 2007, which is a prestigious milestone marking 25 years of professional service through the PGA of America. That honor, now nearly two decades behind him, is a testament to a career that is still very much in motion. His dedication has never wavered; it has only grown deeper with time.
Among the many accolades he has earned, Agone is especially proud of being named the WNYPGA Special Award winner for Youth Player Development in both 1989 and 1990. Those early honors reflect a foundational passion that still drives him today: mentoring young players, cultivating talent, and making golf accessible and enjoyable for all ages.
Today, Agone continues to serve as the Head Golf Professional at Gowanda Country Club, a scenic, historic course nestled in Collins, NY. Designed by Donald Smith, Gowanda is known for its scenic layout and welcoming atmosphere, which are attributes that mirror Agone’s own approach to leadership and hospitality.
Agone plays a key role in all aspects of the club’s golf operations. Under his direction, the club's Pro Shop has become a model of service and selection offering members and guests top tier equipment and apparel from trusted brands. But more than retail expertise, it’s Agone’s personal touch, such as his ability to remember names, offer timely advice, and promote the joy of the game, that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. His steady leadership ensures that every part of the club reflects excellence and care.
While many professionals look back on long careers with pride, Paul Agone continues to build his legacy with every lesson taught, every junior golfer encouraged, and every member served. He is not simply a figure from Western New York’s golf past; he is a vital, active part of its present and future.
As we recognize him at this year’s WNY Classic, we do so not to close a chapter, but to honor the chapters he continues to write. Agone represents everything the PGA of America holds dear: passion, integrity, mentorship, and a lifelong commitment to the game. Paul Agone didn’t just play the long game; he defined it.
