Ian McConnell (Country Club of Fairfax) claimed his fourth Section victory at the MAPGA Assistant Professional Championship, held at The Country Club of Virginia (Richmond, VA).
He finished the event with a total score of 7-under par, defeating the defending champion Jon Moles by just a single stroke. During the final round, McConnell made seven birdies to shoot 4-under par, despite making a triple bogey on the second hole. Three holes later, he hit a ball in the water, but made a 30-footer to save par. From there, it was smooth sailing.
McConnell said he’s dreamed of winning this event since joining the section, and this year he was able to get the job done! His victory also secured his spot in the 2025 Assistant PGA Professional Championship in November along with our other professionals who qualified for the Championship.
Ian McConnell (Country Club of Fairfax) Anthony DeFrank (TPC Potomac at Avenel), Larkin Gross (Westwood Country Club), and Alex Hoffman (Columbia Country Club) will represent the Middle Atlantic Section in the 2025 Championship in Port St. Lucie, FL!
Congratulations!
Brendan McGrath clinched the title at the MAPGA Senior Championship by one shot on his home turf at Trump National Golf Club (Sterling, VA), where he serves the club as an Assistant Professional.
He was the only player in the field to finish under par thanks to his score of 1-under in the final round, and he defeated former PGA Champions TOUR and current PGA Life Member, Dick Mast, who entered the final round with a four shot lead. Mast narrowly missed his birdie putt on the 18th hole that would’ve sent the two into a playoff.
McGrath also defeated his co-worker and Director of Golf at Trump National GC, John O’Leary by two shots during the Championship. This came less than a week after the two faced off in the MAPGA Senior Match Play Finals, also held at Trump National GC, where O’Leary prevailed by a 2&1 margin.
This win also qualified McGrath for the 2025 Senior PGA Professional Championship in October.
Brendan McGrath (Trump National Golf Club), Dick Mast (PGA Life Member), John O’Leary (Trump National Golf Club), Matt Kayson (Montclair Golf Club), and Dirk Schultz (Maryland National) will represent the Middle Atlantic Section in Port St. Lucie, FL at the National Championship.
