Jesse Mueller captured the 50th Southwest PGA Match Play Championship after defeating Marty Jertson, 3 & 1, in the final match held at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz.
“I knew it was going be a tough match playing against Marty, since he’s one of the best players in our Section,” said Mueller. “To come out on top and win my second Southwest PGA Match Play title, and both here at Desert Forest, is really special and so awesome.”
Mueller, PGA General Manager at Grand Canyon University Golf Course in Phoenix, lost the opening hole to Jertson after making bogey. The match was quickly tied after Jertson, PGA VP of Fitting & Performance for PING, bogeyed the par-4 second hole.
Both players halved the next eight holes until Mueller birdied the par-5, 11th to go 1-Up in the match. He increased his lead to 2-Up with a birdie on No. 14 and closed out the match with a birdie at No. 17.
The victory was Mueller’s second Match Play title in the Section (2023).
In the morning semifinal matches Mueller defeated Tommi Avant, PGA Assistant Golf Professional at Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz., 5&3. In the second semi-final, Jertson defeated D.K. Kim, PGA Assistant Golf Professional at Desert Mountain, 2-Up.
The 68th Southwest PGA Championship/PPC is scheduled for September 15-17 at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix. The 54-hole Championship is the premier member event on the Southwest PGA calendar. Last year Jesse Mueller, PGA General Manager from Grand Canyon University Golf Course in Phoenix, won his third Section Championship after finishing with a 54-hole total of 211 (72-70-69). His margin of victory was one stroke better than runner-up Tommi Avant, PGA Assistant Golf Professional from Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
With the victory, Mueller earned the prestigious title, a PPC qualifying spot and an exemption into 2025 WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale (Ariz.).
The winner of the 68th Southwest PGA Championship earns the prestigious title, a spot in the 2026 PGA Professional National Championship, scheduled to take place April 26- 29, 2026 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort on the Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes courses, and an exemption into the 2026 WM Phoenix Open, scheduled to take place February 5-8, 2026 at TPC Scottsdale (Ariz.).
