Allyship is the intentional and consistent practice of using one’s voice and position to support and advocate with others in the workforce. Unlike mentorship, which focuses on advising and guiding, allyship involves active support – publicly endorsing, opening doors to opportunities and standing beside colleagues in moments of challenge.
In the workplace, allies help remove barriers, create opportunities and cultivate a culture of trust. When employees and leaders embrace allyship as part of daily practice, it strengthens relationships, improves retention and drives innovation.
Allyship can help foster inclusion around topics such as mental health, age, disability and faith. A 2022 Deloitte study found that organizations with strong allyship cultures are twice as likely to meet or exceed inclusion goals. In industries from tech to professional services, programs that pair education with advocacy are driving measurable change. EY’s “Belonging Ambassadors” initiative pairs leaders with employees from different backgrounds to sponsor professional growth. For the golf industry – where tradition, relationships and community are core – allyship can bridge generational gaps, open doors to new talent and ensure that every employee and participant feels valued.
Within the PGA of America, allyship takes shape through initiatives like PGA WORKS and PGA LEAD. PGA WORKS Fellowships place recent graduates in one-year, paid roles at PGA of America Sections, providing hands-on experience in golf operations, community engagement and event planning. These fellowships have helped launch careers, especially when leaders act as true allies – connecting fellows to decision-makers, inviting them into strategic discussions and amplifying contributions. PGA LEAD (2024-25 PGA LEAD class is pictured) develops a pipeline of future leaders by pairing PGA of America Members from a range of backgrounds with advocates who can help open doors to governance roles, committee service and executive opportunities.
Building Allyship into Golf Facility Culture
Golf facilities – whether public, private or resort – can make allyship a cornerstone of workplace culture by embedding it into policies, training and daily interactions. The goal is to ensure that every team member feels seen, supported and empowered to succeed.
From Intention to Transformation
Allyship is an ongoing commitment. Leaders must be willing to act and advocate for opportunities. Employees must feel empowered to speak up and create space for contributions. Courses and clubs are hubs of connection and conversation. When allyship becomes part of that fabric, the result is an inclusive, innovative and resilient workplace.
