PGA Professional Jeff Gove of Sandpoint, Idaho captured the 100th Washington Open Invitational at Tacoma Country & Golf Club, defeating PGA Professional Craig Ronne of Emerald Valley Golf Club in a sudden-death playoff. Gove birdied the first playoff hole to secure the victory and claim his third Washington Open title, having previously won in 1995 and 2012. His 2012 victory also matched the tournament scoring record originally set by Tim Feenstra.
“The Washington Open has great history ,” said Gove. “I remember as a kid growing up at Inglewood when the tournament was played there it was a big deal. I caddied for my Uncle Mike in 1985 when he won the event at Inglewood, and it really made an impression on me. So I am honored to have won the event a few times and hope to compete again in the future.”
Tacoma Country & Golf Club previously hosted the Washington Open in 2025, 1998, 1997 and 1932. In this year’s edition, players were greeted with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70s throughout the championship in Lakewood, Washington. The course presented an exceptional test, with firm yet receptive greens rolling at a smooth 13 on the Stimpmeter.
“Tacoma was a very special treat to play,” said Gove. “The course was very fast and so it really highlighted good ball striking and smart course management.”
Low amateur honors went to Henry Mills of West Seattle Golf Course, who finished fifth overall.
The championship featured outstanding play from an elite field. During Tuesday’s second round, PGA Professional Tyler Fitchett of Rainier Golf & Country Club recorded a rare double eagle (albatross) on the par-5 16th hole. Earlier in the day, PGA Professional Preston Bebich of Canterwood Golf & Country Club made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole.
Gove entered the final round six shots behind the lead before mounting a comeback on Wednesday.
“When we started the final round, I was six strokes back from the leader so I was hoping to have a chance on the back nine,” said Gove. “On the 18th hole we were tied and I wanted to give myself a chance to make 3 and win the event.”
After narrowly missing the green in two on the 72nd hole, Gove converted a clutch seven-foot birdie putt to force the playoff. He then birdied the first extra hole for the victory.
“During the playoff, I relied on my past experiences in playoffs,” Gove said. “I did not hit a good second shot, but a great putt found the hole.”
