The Gateway PGA Section celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a special Pro-Am at St. Albans Country Club on June 15th, bringing together PGA Professionals, amateurs, sponsors, and supporters for a day of golf and camaraderie.
The event served as a fundraiser to support the Gateway PGA Section’s office build-out and future initiatives that benefit PGA Professionals throughout the region. It also highlighted the Section’s yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration, including the development of a commemorative 50th Anniversary Book honoring the people and moments that have shaped the Gateway PGA over the past five decades.
As the Section reflects on 50 years of growing the game and serving its members, the Anniversary Pro-Am provided an opportunity to celebrate its legacy while investing in the future of the Gateway PGA and the professionals who continue to make an impact throughout Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois.
After three days of intense competition at St. Clair Country Club, Curtis Brokenbrow of The Quarry at Crystal Springs emerged as the champion of the 64-player Match Play Championship, defeating James Tierney in a memorable final match.
The championship featured a full field of 64 players battling through head-to-head match play over three days, with Brokenbrow and Tierney advancing through a challenging bracket to earn spots in the championship match.
The final began with both players trading birdies and matching one another shot for shot. Through the opening four holes, Brokenbrow and Tierney were each 2-under-par, setting the stage for a tightly contested battle.
Brokenbrow began to separate himself over the middle portion of the round, carding a 33 on the front nine to take momentum into the back side. He continued his strong play with birdies on holes 11 and 13 while adding another on the par-5 15th.
Tierney remained within striking distance throughout the match, posting a solid 34 on the front nine and matching Brokenbrow with a birdie on the 10th hole. However, Brokenbrow’s steady play and timely birdies proved to be the difference.
When the final putts dropped, Brokenbrow signed for a remarkable 9-under-par 63, while Tierney finished with an impressive 6-under-par 66 through 17 holes. The three-stroke advantage secured Brokenbrow’s first Match Play win and capped off an outstanding week of golf at St. Clair Country Club.
What an amazing night at Busch Stadium! From start to finish, this year’s Ozzie & Friends: Dinner on the Diamond was an absolute hit. The energy in the room was electric, and it showcased just how much the St. Louis community loves Ozzie and supports our military.
Every dollar raised was in support of the PGA REACH Gateway Foundation and its work on behalf of veterans. The foundation’s flagship military program, PGA HOPE, introduces veterans and active-duty service members to the game of golf to strengthen their physical, mental, and emotional well-being — always at no cost to those who served. That mission gave the evening its heartbeat.
It was a jam-packed night, with a few moments standing out above the rest.
We proudly honored our Veteran of the Year, Steve Jones, and took a moment to thank every service member in the room for their service. Ozzie’s special guests, Willie McGee and Vince Coleman, traded old playing-day stories that had the entire room laughing. And thanks to the incredible generosity of everyone in attendance, the night raised a remarkable $220,000 for the foundation. To everyone who joined us and gave so generously, you didn’t just attend an event, you made a difference.
