Congratulations to David Hutsell (Baltimore CC) who recently claimed his fourth MAPGA Section Championship!
David broke a nine-year streak of first-time winners of this event with his victory. He won by one shot over Ian McConnell after finishing with a three-day total score of -5, playing Bethesda Country Club and Lakewood Country Club. David shot all three rounds under par, with a 69-69-71. His second round 3-under par 69 at Lakewood in the rain might have been the round of the tournament!
David worked his way to a 3 stroke lead after a birdie on the short par 4 15th at Lakewood, but was pushed to the limit by McConnell. McConnell birdied 17 and 18, forcing Hutsell to make a nervy 10-footer for par on 18 to win. As it had all day, Hutsell's putter came through as he confidently sank the putt to win for the 4th time.
Hutsell joins Rick Schuller as a 4-time winner of the Middle Atlantic Section Championship, trailing only Charlie Bassler, who was a 5-time winner in the 1950s.
Rick Schuller, PGA defended his Senior Open of Virginia title at Independence Golf Club, in Midlothian, VA. He defeated a field of 72 amateurs and professionals after rounds of 69-72 for a total score of -3. Fellow PGA of America Golf Professional, Jimmy Flippen (Waterfront Golf Club), was runner-up by a margin of one stroke.
With the victory, Schuller becomes the Senior Open of Virginia’s first four-time winner, and the first MAPGA professional to win back-to-back championships. This victory adds another milestone to his storied career.
Schuller’s MAPGA Section playing record is almost impossible to quantify. He has been an outstanding player in the Section for many years, winning the Section Championship 4 times, was Section Player of the Year 5 times, and Senior Player of the Year 7 times.
In 2009, he won both the National Match Play and the National Stroke Play on the way to winning National Player of the Year honors. He also won the National Match Play in 2006 and 2011. His list of playing accomplishments includes over 100 wins in MAPGA Section events and qualifiers, and in 2024 he was inducted into the MAPGA Hall of Fame.
