Steve Delmar, PGA, and Kaylor Steger, PGA Associate, tied for the top spot among Middle Atlantic Section professionals at Independence Golf Club.
Two members of the Middle Atlantic Section posted the low scores among MAPGA professionals in the field at this year's State Open of Virginia. Steve Delmar, PGA, of Columbia Country Club in Columbia, Md., and Kaylor Steger, PGA Associate, of River Bend Club in Great Falls, Va., each finished at 3-under 207 to share low professional honors among Section members, finishing tied for seventh overall.
The State Open was played at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va. The tournament drew a strong field of professionals and top amateurs competing over three rounds on a par-70 layout.
Mark Lawrence Jr. won his second State Open title in dominant fashion, posting rounds of 67-63-66 for a 14-under 196 total, four strokes ahead of amateur runner-up Drew Brockwell. Lawrence, who grew up in Richmond and played college golf at both Auburn and Virginia Tech, made just one bogey over 54 holes.
He effectively put the tournament away on the back nine Sunday. After Brockwell birdied No. 9 to cut the lead to one stroke, Lawrence drained a 20-foot birdie on No. 13 and then a 45-foot birdie on the par-3 14th to push the margin to four. The final four holes were a formality.
Lawrence became just the second player to win the State Open as both an amateur and a professional, joining Faber Jamerson. He is also just the second player to win at both Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke and Independence Golf Club, joining four-time State Open champion Jay Woodson.
