Andy Montgomery practically bounced onto the ninth green at Country Club of the North, Monday afternoon. That confident stride took some of the mystery out of his subsequent birdie putt because any man who walks up to a green like that knows his next putt is going in the hole. And it did, along with pretty much every putt he and his partner Ben Kern looked at during the 2025 SOPGA Summer Pro-Pro.
The duo combined for 14 birdies, including seven straight at one point, on their way to shooting a 58 best ball score. 29-29 with seven birdies on each side. Not bad for a Monday.
Their respective Tuesday mornings at work might have been interesting. Kern, the General Manager at Hickory Hills Golf Club, and Montgomery’s 14-under victory was four shots better than their coworkers in second place. Chris Muse, of Hickory Hills, and Bob Sowards, of Kinsale, combined for 10-under and solo second.
The victory breaks up Jon McDonald’s streak of three straight victories on the SOPGA Tour while also giving Kern his fourth victory of the season. He’s now firmly in first place in the SOPGA Rolex Player of the Year standings with twice as many points as Sowards in second place.
There’s hot and then there’s whatever Jon McDonald is currently doing on the golf course. McDonald kept is blazing month of July going at Dayton Country Club, winning the 48th Southern Ohio PGA Assistant Professional Championship with rounds of 68-67. His 5-under score bested Taylor Suggs by three shots and further showcased the exceptional golf he’s been playing over the last few weeks.
McDonald has won or tied for first in the last three events, including a T1 finish at the Pro-Assistant Championship, a victory at the Queen City Classic and the Assistant PPC.
His last four rounds in SOPGA events have all been in the 60s, as well.
With his second place finish, Taylor Suggs booked his trip to the National Assistant Professional Championship in November. Taylor Holt will join him as the other qualifier from the SOPGA. The National Assistant PPC is November 13-16 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie
