The 456th PGA Member to earn PGA Master Professional status comes from the North Florida PGA! John Mousley, PGA is the Founder and Director of Instruction of JM Golf Performance and a PGA Golf Instructor at the University of North Florida Golf Complex. John's journey to earning PGA Master Professional status in Teaching and Coaching began with becoming a PGA Member in 2013. In 2014, he took a teaching position with Golf Made Simple, an academy at Hammock Beach. This position helped develop his interest in having golf instruction tailored to students. He was there about three years and then moved to GolfTEC in Jacksonville for about a one year. St. Johns Golf Club was his next stop as the Director of Instruction. He was there from 2017 - 2020 and got into Player Development, Callaway club sales, and PGA Jr. League. He opened an indoor facility in Ponte Vedra with Titleist Performance Institute in 2020 and then founded JM Golf Performance at University of North Florida Golf Complex in 2022. He made the decision to purse this designation after he finished the PGA of America Certified Program in Teaching and Coaching in 2019.
John's Teaching and Coaching philosophy is built around the idea that there are many different ways to swing the golf club. He isn't too focused on how the swing looks, but more with how the body moves. He really enjoys taking people through the Titleist Performance Institute screening to see what their body can do and how they can swing the club efficiently. For John, this helps him build a swing model that is more student centric. "A bad back will override a good golf swing. A poorly fit driver will override a good golf swing. Traditional golf instruction silos poor swings to the swing itself," says Mousley. "It does not take into account the students' understanding of the golf swing or what their bodies can and cannot do in the swing. Not everything we see with a student is a golf swing issue. They could hit it really well on the range but can’t take it to the course. I take 75 - 120 minutes to understand the person I am working with and get to know them beyond how their golf swing looks."
As far as using this designation for the game, he said, "I see this helping me get a seat at a bigger table, so to speak, for how golf can be a vehicle for health and wellness in society. Being able to discuss why this could be important to the healthcare industry and how healthcare organizations can take the research to help golf become a part of their programs. Discussing the ways that golf and healthcare can work together can help grow the game." Mousley encourages other PGA Golf Professionals to keep learning and to become an expert on a specific topic. He says to "know everything about that topic and become a specialist."
Congratulations to John on earning PGA Master Professional status from all of us here at the North Florida PGA!
