Tournament season is in full swing and the Carolinas Section is embracing every moment. June kept us on our toes, with our team supporting 12 different tournaments across North Carolina and South Carolina. From sunrise tee times to late nights on the range, we’ve been all-in —working side by side with passionate players, dedicated volunteers and hardworking staff to ensure each event runs like clockwork.
And we’re just getting started. July is already shaping up to be another action-packed month, with nearly a dozen more tournaments lined up. It’s an exciting time for golf in the Carolinas, and we’re proud to play a role in every swing, putt and post-round celebration.
One of the standout tournaments this month is the 101st Carolinas Open, held at Cedarwood Country Club in Charlotte on July 15-17. Leading up to the Championship, seven qualifiers took place last month across North Carolina and South Carolina, showcasing talent from all corners of the region. A heartfelt thank you to Cedarwood Country Club for graciously hosting the Carolinas Open and helping make it a memorable experience for players and spectators alike.
The Carolinas Section is also thrilled to welcome Grace Berthoud, our new intern, who joined us in mid-May. In just a short time, she’s already made a meaningful impact on our tournament operations. Her energy and dedication are a great reminder of how this sport — and a shared love for the game — continues to inspire and shape the next generation of golf professionals.
As we look forward, we’re excited for what lies ahead and eager to see how the season continues to unfold. —Maddie Schneider
PGA of America President Don Rea Jr. met with the Central New York PGA Membership at our Annual Spring Meeting on April 21. Rea, who earned PGA Master Professional status in 2024, served as the meeting’s special guest speaker at Turning Stone Resort Casino.
To symbolize being the 44th PGA of America President, Rea donned a No. 44 Syracuse University football jersey for a photo shoot outside the Shenendoah Clubhouse. The number “44” is legendary at SU as it’s associated with all-time football greats Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little.
Speaking to the more than 60 Section Members in attendance, Rea gave insight into his journey from professional baseball umpire to earning PGA of America Membership and becoming PGA of America President.
Rea also fielded a number of submitted questions from Section President William Weimer, PGA. In between breakout sessions, Rea enjoyed interacting with members one on one. He was impressed with the Section’s shared commitment to elevate the game in Central New York.
“When I come to Sections that are small, under 200 members, it’s like everybody’s a much tighter group,” Rea said. “They are all pulling each other in the same direction. The amount of owners who are in the room who also are PGA Members and encouraging other PGA Members to be owners like them…that’s probably the biggest thing I’m going to take away from today’s meeting.
“The Section is 200 strong and they are not all working against each other. They know in order to survive you have to work together. That’s what I see and feel.”
Also in attendance at the Spring Meeting were PGA REACH CNY Partners Danielle Bright of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, Tony Starks of Eastside Golf and Denny Mazur of OnCore Golf. —Fran Piraino

In the heart of the Midwest PGA Section Office now hangs more than just a sign — it’s a symbol of service, resilience and craftsmanship. The striking PGA HOPE Midwest sign was handcrafted by none other than Dustin Confer, a proud PGA HOPE Midwest graduate and the owner of Thirty-Six Metal Works.
Dustin’s journey from service member to skilled metal artist is a story of transformation and purpose. After participating in PGA HOPE, a program designed to introduce Veterans to the game of golf as a form of therapy and rehabilitation, Dustin found both healing and community. The impact of PGA HOPE inspired him not only to grow within the sport, but also to give back to the organization that helped him find a new path.
Using his unique talents in metalworking, Dustin created a custom piece that embodies the spirit of PGA HOPE. The sign, now proudly displayed at the Midwest PGA Section Office, serves as a tribute to Veterans, the healing power of golf and the importance of continued service — through creativity and craftsmanship.
The handcrafted metalwork showcases not just artistic skill but deep appreciation and pride in what PGA HOPE represents. It stands as a powerful reminder of how programs like PGA HOPE continue to change lives, long after the last round of golf.
Dustin Confer’s work is more than art — it’s a story forged in steel and service. And now, every visitor to the Midwest PGA Section Office will see the lasting legacy of one Veteran’s journey, shaped by purpose and sealed in metal. —Adam Greeno

The Northern California PGA had five PGA of America Professionals representing the Section at this year’s PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The lineup of professionals was as follows: Brad Marek, PGA (Corica Park Golf Course in Alameda), David Solomon, PGA (Diablo Country Club in Diablo), Tom Johnson, PGA (Meadow Club in Fairfax), Chelso Barrett, PGA (CordeValle Club in San Martin) and Jason Schmuhl (Windsor Golf Club in Windsor).
These players exemplified some of the best golf Northern California has to offer and, as a Section, represented Northern California proudly! As the dust settled after four days of hard competitive golf, Johnson separated himself from the pack of Northern California Professionals, finding himself in the coveted Top 20. Thus, he earned himself the reward of being one of the 20 Corebridge Financial Team members to go on and have the opportunity to compete at the 2025 PGA Championship held at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.
For Tom, this was his first-ever appearance in a major championship, an accomplishment he vocalized as something he had always dreamed of. Tom did have success on the PGA TOUR before, most recently making the cut at last year’s 2024 Procore Championship and finishing T50.
He battled hard the first two days of the 2025 PGA Championship, ultimately falling short of making the cut. However, Tom expressed how much the experience and opportunity to be there was more than a PGA Professional could ask for. The Northern California PGA is extremely proud of all five players who underwent the process of competing, and especially proud of Tom Johnson, PGA, for representing the Section at a major championship. —Patrick Appel

On March 25, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales stood on Turtleback Mountain’s 18th green on to read Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s proclamation declaring Turtleback the new home of the New Mexico Open. Since 1954, the 71-year championship has crisscrossed the state, survived the 2020 cancellation, reprised at Ladera in 2021, and showcased top talent at Rockwind Community Links.
The move to Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort was sparked by PreReal Investments’ multimillion-dollar renovation and rebranding of the former Sierra del Rio Course. Says David Berman, co-founder of PreReal Investments, “With Turtleback’s title partnership and PreReal investments’ multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the resort and the surrounding community, the tournament and the entire area are poised for tremendous growth.”
Adds Sun Country PGA Executive Director Cory Armstrong, “We are thrilled to partner with Turtleback Mountain Golf and Resort. This collaboration not only enhances the tournament experience for players, but also contributes to the long-term growth of golf in New Mexico and West Texas.”
Sept. 15–17 will feature a record $100,000 purse and a Pro-Am on the 14th. Free clinics for youth, military Veterans and women will emphasize the Open’s commitment to community. Legends like Lee Trevino (New Mexico Open winner in 1966, ‘72) and Notah Begay III (1998) first proved themselves on these fairways. In September, a new generation of professionals and top amateurs will follow in their footsteps.
As the New Mexico Governor pledged to uplift tourism and sport, this three-year partnership marks a new era for the Southwest’s premier championship. To every Section Professional, the invitation is clear: Join us Sept. 15–17 and help write the next chapter of the New Mexico Open’s storied legacy. —Clay Adelizzi
The Tennessee PGA Section proudly welcomes Angela Hamontree, Daniel Ferrere Sr. and Casey Willett as our newest PGA HOPE Platoon Leaders. These three outstanding individuals bring unique experiences, a deep passion for service and a shared mission to uplift fellow Veterans through the game of golf.
Platoon Leaders serve as vital ambassadors of PGA HOPE, offering support, guidance and encouragement to new participants. They help lead program events, assist PGA of America Professionals and foster meaningful connections within the Veteran community. Angela, Daniel and Casey will play a key role in expanding PGA HOPE’s reach across Tennessee.
Hamontree, a 2023 graduate, became the first woman to complete the Chattanooga program. Once isolated, Angela found purpose and connection through PGA HOPE. Now a First Tee coach and active community volunteer, she’s especially passionate about reaching women Veterans.
Ferrere, also a 2023 graduate, is one of the most active PGA HOPE alumni in Chattanooga. He’s a frequent graduation speaker, First Tee coach, and a beloved presence at events. Daniel believes “it only takes one person to make a difference in a Veteran’s life” and is committed to spreading the word about the program.
Willett grew up immersed in golf but stepped away after military injuries. PGA HOPE helped him rediscover the game — and its healing power. Today, Casey volunteers at events across Chattanooga and works as a Patient Advocate at the VA Clinic, where he actively shares the benefits of PGA HOPE.
Beyond events, these leaders will help secure grants, drive fundraising, and connect graduates with ongoing opportunities in golf and beyond.
Please join us in welcoming Angela, Daniel and Casey. We are excited to see the difference they will make as leaders in our Tennessee PGA HOPE family. —Kelsey Ludwigsen

A cool and overcast morning would greet the participants of the first individual Wisconsin PGA Player of the Year point event on May 5. For the eighth straight year, the Assistant Professional Stroke Play and Memorial Classic would share a date, venue and time. The annual stroke play events brought together a field of 100 Wisconsin PGA of America Professionals.
Earning the victory in the Memorial Classic was Pine Hills C.C. Head PGA Professional, Andy Smith. Smith and Kurt Mantyla would each card 5-under-par 67s in regulation. Smith’s round was highlighted by his opening stretch, as he posted five birdies in his first 11 holes.
However, he could not quite get the round to 6-under and an outright victory. In overtime the duo would match birdies on the par-5 first hole and then Smith was able to secure the win with a par on the par-4 second.
It marked the first individual victory for Smith since he transferred into the Wisconsin Section from Minnesota in January of 2024.
In the Assistants Stroke Play contest, the winner was Matt Sabol. The Pine Hills C.C. Assistant PGA Professional carded a 3-under-par 69 in regulation to match 2023 Champion Josh Grisa of Blackwolf Run. The Sheboygan native would then come up clutch in overtime. On the par-4 second, Sabol would have just 70 yards to the green and knock a flip wedge to just four feet. The short birdie putt delivered him the win. The win marks Sabol’s first individual professional victory.
A big thank you goes out to all the salespeople for their support of the day. We would also like to express our appreciation to Rolex for their sponsorship of the day. A great deal of appreciation goes out to Morningstar G.C. and their staff. —Andy Landenberger
