Tips & Tricks
We’ve all been there: You’re at an annual wellness visit and your provider asks if there’s anything you’d like to discuss. Right away, you think about something that’s been bothering you for a while — but feel a rush of embarrassment at the thought of saying it out loud.
It can be intimidating to bring up sensitive topics with your health care provider. You may not feel comfortable discussing certain issues, like bladder control, falling or loss of balance, or sex-related concerns.
It’s important to remember that your provider is a professional who’s practiced at talking about hard-todiscuss health concerns. With that in mind, here are some tips for talking to your provider about sensitive topics.
1. Come preparedBefore your appointment, write down any questions or topics that you want to discuss, and make a list of symptoms or experiences you’ve been having.
2. Take your timeIf something comes up during the appointment that you weren’t expecting, ask your provider to pause or repeat themselves. This will allow you time to consider what you heard. Ask follow-up questions if needed. The goal is to leave the appointment with a clear understanding of what was discussed.
On the flip side, it’s important that your provider sees the full picture of your health, so don’t be afraid to explain your situation in more detail.
3. Bring supportIf it makes you more comfortable, bring someone with you who can provide emotional support, ask questions and help take notes.
4. Know you’re not the only oneSome of the health topics that feel the most embarrassing to talk about are actually the most common. For example, many women experience bladder issues after menopause, and men may experience them from an enlarged prostrate or blockage.
5. Focus on solutionsWhile some concerns are common, it doesn’t mean you have to live with them. For instance, if balance has become an issue and you’re worried about falling, there are ways to overcome that. Your provider can discuss possible treatment options or simple ways to make your living space easier to navigate (see the blue box below). The more open you are about your concerns — and your goals for overcoming them — the closer you’ll get to a solution.
Remember: No topic is too personal to talk about with your provider. They are trained to discuss hard topics and can help you move forward.
