Larry Beyer had both a Bachelor and Masters degree in Forestry from Penn State and spent more than three decades of his career as a surface mine reclamation specialist helping to restore the dire strip-mined landscapes left behind by the coal industry into the meadows and forests they once were.
In the early 2000s he began his volunteer work with the Capital Area Greenbelt Association, shaping and grooming the trail into the lovely necklace it is today.
Larry spent much of his volunteer time working closely with Norm Lacasse. He also helped with Norm’s workdays with adjudicated youth from the Diakon Wilderness Center.
According to CAGA’s Becky Schuchert, who knew Larry during his entire involvement with CAGA, “Larry could always be counted on when a chainsaw and operator was needed, or there were trees that needed to be planted. He participated in about 20 Tours de Belt, driving the sag wagon, picking up cyclists whose bikes or bodies failed, and taking them back to the finish line.” She adds, “He seemed to be prepared for any scenario, always having the right gear, the right tools, and the determination to set things right.”
CAGA is grateful for his countless hours as a volunteer, remembers him fondly, and offers its condolences to his widow, Cordell Affeldt, his children, and all who mourn his passing.
