The Carolinas PGA is honored to announce that Mike Casto, PGA, will be inducted into the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame for the Class of 2024.
In 1990, Mike took the position as Director of Golf and General Manager at Fort Jackson Golf Club on the U.S. Army Base in Columbia, South Carolina, where he eventually retired in 2022.
During his tenure at Fort Jackson Golf Club, Casto was the Chairman of several Carolinas PGA Committees and served as Secretary from 2008-09, Vice President from 2010-11, and eventually as President of the Section from 2012-13.
Throughout his career, he has been an advocate and promoter of junior golf and growth of the game initiatives. Shortly after Casto started as Director of Golf and General Manager, he established “the Army’s Best Golf” as Fort Jackson Golf Club’s Mission Statement. He was able to obtain the support of the Command at Fort Jackson and the resources through the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Fund leadership to take the necessary steps to improve the playing conditions and offer the quality of service that Active Duty Soldiers, Retired Military, DOD Civilians, National Guardsmen, Reservists and their families desire and deserve.
One of Casto’s most successful programs to grow the game was the Get Golf Ready program. Casto and his talented team of PGA of America Professionals worked tirelessly with this program. Get Golf Ready was a great fit for the introduction of the game for U.S. Soldiers and their families, as well as the Retired Military patrons. Since his retirement in 2022, Casto has been a PGA HOPE Instructor within the Columbia area programs.
Mike will be recognized at the Carolinas PGA Special Awards and Honors Dinner presented by Club Car in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Feb. 16, 2025. —Jess Hanson
The 25th anniversary of the Central New York PGA Junior Tour is a significant milestone. The Junior Tour’s longevity and success is a tribute to the support of the Section’s PGA of America Members, as well as the junior golfers, past and present, who have registered to compete year after year.
“A Season of Friends” was the theme this past summer in celebration of the Junior Tour’s anniversary presented by the Esther Cannizzo Junior Golf Foundation, a longtime partner.
The 2024 Junior Tour saw an increase of members with 183 players. They played 894 tournament rounds, which was approximately 100 more rounds than the previous season. The competitive season opened with the Bernard’s Custom Logo Junior Open in April and ran until mid-August, ending with the annual Tesori/Mulherin Cup.
Twenty-five years ago, the CNY PGA Junior Tour was created to grow the game and provide affordable, competitive events for junior golfers. Other important elements of the program include developing the quality of junior golfers in the region, in addition to encouraging sportsmanship while promoting the Rules and etiquette of the game.
The original mission of the Junior Tour continues today by providing junior golfers of all skill levels affordable events that are administered to the highest professional standards of the PGA of America.
The importance and the impact of the Junior Tour is far-reaching. Over the course of 25 years, many CNY PGA Junior Tour alumnus, both male and female, have gone on to play golf at the high school and college levels.
The CNY PGA Junior Tour has also served as a stepping stone for several former players who chose to pursue a career in the golf industry. More than 10 PGA of America Members in the Central New York Section alone are Junior Tour alums. —Fran Piraino
Walter Lowell, Honorary Life President of the Connecticut Section, passed away on Sept. 16. A PGA of America Hall of Fame inductee, Lowell was an influential figure locally and nationally.
Walter and his wife Phyllis owned and operated the Canton Public Golf Course for many years. Not only did they introduce many golfers to the game, but countless Section Professionals trace their beginnings back to their experience with Walter and his golf course.
As Section President, he helped modernize the Section and later rose to national prominence as a PGA of America Director.
A man of great vision, Walter pioneered the inclusion of women into the PGA of America, a cause he felt very strongly about. Despite some criticism and personal hardship, he continued to advocate for the inclusion of women to bolster the future strength of the Association. As fate would have it, Suzy Whaley began her ascension as the first woman President of the PGA of America with roots in the Connecticut Section.
In 1978 Lowell’s efforts were recognized and he was named national PGA of America Golf Professional of the Year.

The Metropolitan PGA and Silvercrest Asset Management Group — an investment advisor providing asset and wealth management, financial planning and consulting services to individuals, families and charitable foundations — partnered once again to host the third annual Silvercrest Cup, a tournament series for Met PGA of America Professionals.
The series included four qualifying events and culminated in a $30,000 Silvercrest Cup final at Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. The one-day 18-hole stroke play championship saw an impressive field that included 2024 Met PGA Player of the Year Peter Ballo of The Connecticut Golf Club. With a season already highlighted in the record books, Ballo would look to add another accolade to his resume but would need to face brother and Tamarack Country Club Head Professional Mike Ballo Jr. to earn the Cup.
The Ballos, along with 2022 New York State Open Champion Peicheng Chen and 2024 Met PGA Women’s Player of the Year Cindy Lacrosse, would finish their rounds tied at even par and would head to a playoff. Each Ballo brother would manage pars on the first playoff hole to move on, with Chen and Lacrosse eliminated after suffering bogeys. Peter and Mike then went shot for shot in a thrilling eight-hole playoff in what inevitably was one of the most dramatic finishes of the season. Both would showcase incredible composure, resilience, skill and competitive spirit as they battled to determine a champion.
The playoff culminated on the eighth playoff hole where Peter Ballo would manage a par 3 on Tamarack’s 12th hole to hoist the Silvercrest Cup and add another trophy to his remarkable season. With the victory, Peter received $15,000, one of the most lucrative winner’s checks on the Section’s tournament calendar.
While the Silvercrest Cup rewards playing excellence of Metropolitan PGA of America Professionals, the series also provided a generous donation to the Met PGA Foundation, the Metropolitan PGA Section’s 501(c)(3) charitable foundation. —Emily Meier
The Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Team built a 5-1 lead over the Michigan PGA Section Team in morning four-ball matches to take control early and eventually win 11.5-6.5 in the 52nd Fuller Cup Matches at Blythefield Country Club on Oct. 8.
Top amateur golfers representing the GAM and top PGA of America Professionals representing the PGA squared off in a Ryder Cup-like format with six four-ball matches and 12 singles matches to determine a winning team.
The GAM, which has won six times in the last seven years, still trails in the historic series, 36-14-2. The Michigan Section PGA Team dominated the matches in the first three decades of play.
The format has changed over the years, but the matches are presented to promote sportsmanship, friendship and quality golf among professionals and amateurs. The matches are named for the late Ernest Fuller, a Michigan golf course developer.
The GAM Team is selected via the GAM Player of the Year points and availability, and the PGA selects its team from the players who won Section events in the last year, the host Professional and its Player of the Year points.
The GAM won both sessions, four-ball 5-1, and singles 6.5-5.5.
Michael Coriasso of Royal Oak, Joe Montpas of Flushing, McCoy Biagioli of White Lake and Ferris State University, and Drew Coble of Lake Orion and Grand Valley State University won four ball points with their partners and also won singles matches to lead the GAM Team victory.
Justin Sui of Lake Orion, who won a full point with Coble in four-ball, tied the PGA’s Jeff Roth of BOYNE Golf Academy in the singles matches to secure a 9.5-point total and the Fuller Cup.
Other singles winners for the GAM were Michigan State University golf teammates Drew Miller of East Lansing and Julian Menser of South Lyon.
Ben Cook of Quail Ridge Golf Club and teammate Tim Pearce of Birmingham Country Club won the only four-ball match for the PGA.
Singles match winners for the PGA included Chad Kurmel, the assistant men’s golf coach at Michigan State University, who beat one of his players, Caleb Bond of Williamston, 2 and 1.
The other PGA singles winners were Dan Urban of Gull Lake Country Club, Adam Schumacher of Point O’Woods Golf & Country Club, Patrick Wilkes-Krier of Kendall Academy/Miles of Golf, and Cody Haughton of Red Run Golf Club.
Thank you to the staff at Blythefield Country Club, and also thanks to clothing sponsor Harlestons, who outfitted both teams.
Congratulations to the winning team of Garrett Campbell and Joe Brown of Bloomfield Hills Country Club on winning the 2024 Pro Assistant Championship presented by Evolve Golf, Earth Networks and Winston Collection on Sept. 30.
They finished 15-under-par, shooting 65 in the morning round and 64 in the afternoon. This put them three shots clear of the second-place team of Payne Gniewek and Tyler DeGood of Thousand Oaks Golf Club shooting 12-under.
Fifty-five teams teed it up at the brand-new Cardinal Golf Course at The Inn at St. Johns in Plymouth in this 36-hole best ball event featuring teams of a professional and an assistant from the same facility.
This is the first Section Tournament win for Garrett and Joe, and comes with a 25-year exemption into the Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions.
This marked the first time the Section held an event at the new Cardinal Golf Course. Thanks to all their staff for being so accommodating. We would also like to thank sponsors Evolve Golf, Earth Networks and Winston Collection.
Evolve Golf was on site and conducted a Total Driving Challenge Contest on hole No. 11. Tyler Kapcia from Kent Country Club won the Total Driving Challenge. —Diane Lazaros
Larkin and Paige Gross were two of our four PGA of America Assistant Professionals who qualified for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship played last month, and they made MAPGA and PGA history by being the first married couple to compete together in the Championship.
Larkin (Westwood C.C.) has competed in the Championship five times, but this was Paige’s (Club at Creighton Farms) first appearance. Larkin shot a total score of 3-under during the 2024 National Car Rental MAPGA Assistant Championship at Columbia Country Club in August, and Paige finished with a total score of 3-over after a second-round 67 to propel her into the nantional event in November.

During her 2024 season, Paige also won the Women’s Section Championship, and she competed in the 2024 LPGA Professional Championship.
Congratulations to Larkin and Paige on their performances, as well as Alex Hoffman (Columbia C.C.) and Anthony DeFrank (TPC Potomac) at Avenel for qualifying for last month’s National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, as well. —Emma Smithers
Austin Hardison’s journey to becoming a PGA of America Professional has been marked by determination and hard work. He studied online, attended hands-on experiences in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and continued to work full-time. This combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience formed the backbone of his professional portfolio.
Hardison successfully completed three levels of certification before achieving the status of a certified Class A PGA of America Professional, all while maintaining his responsibilities at the golf course. Under the continued mentorship of Tim Jarman, the PGA of America General Manager at Excelsior Springs Golf Course, Hardison’s career flourished.
Professionally, Hardison’s goal is to stay at Excelsior Springs Golf Course and continue building the golf atmosphere there. He appreciates the course’s rich history, noting that since its opening in 1915, there have only been about a dozen golf professionals who have worked there. This sense of continuity and tradition is important to Hardison, who is honored to become a part of that enduring legacy.
Hardison is quick to acknowledge the support he’s received throughout his career. He praises Adam Greeno, the Section’s Executive Director. “Adam has been a huge addition to the Section,” Hardison emphasized. “He gives us the opportunities and resources we need to succeed in our jobs.”
Hardison also expressed gratitude toward Shane Gardner and Matt Roberts of Orion Management, as well as Jarman for giving him the time and support to play in events and pursue his competitive goals.
As the Head Golf Professional at Excelsior Springs Golf Course, Hardison continues to make his mark in the golfing world. He enjoys working with golfers of all ages, with a particular fondness for junior golfers. His journey from a young golf enthusiast to a PGA of America Professional is a testament to the power of dedication, community support and love for the game. —Ann Butenas

In a collaboration between the Nebraska PGA, Nebraska Golf Association and the Nebraska Women’s Amateur Golf Association (NWAGA), the fourth edition of the Union Bank & Trust Pro + Ladies Jamboree took place at The Country Club of Lincoln. The event raises funds for girls junior golfers across Nebraska in three separate ways.
First, the Laura Saf Scholarship is presented annually by the Nebraska Golf Foundation to a junior golfer who is working on becoming an elite player and needs financial assistance.
Next up, is PGA REACH Nebraska’s Clubs FORE Youth Program, which supplies new clubs, push carts and PGA instruction to high school girls golf programs across the Section.
Finally, the third benefactor of the event is NWAGA’s TEE Grant, which provides financial support to female junior golfers with golf-related expenses. The Union Bank & Trust Pro + Ladies Jamboree continues to make a profound impact on girls across the state.
In addition to raising funds for a great cause, Nebraska PGA of America Professionals teamed up with three women representing the NWAGA from their home clubs for a special day that brings together golfers from across the state.
“As fun as this day is for us, we’re truly here to raise money for a great cause in honor of our dear friend Laura Saf and all that she stood for,” said NWAGA Vice-President Maggie Peters.
Added Doris Robertson of United Bank & Trust, “It’s special to see so many women and people come together to grow the game of golf and to impact young girls who are aspiring golfers. It was an easy yes for Union Bank & Trust to sponsor this event and we’re happy to be a part of it.” —Brett Renner

This historic gathering not only showcased remarkable talent, but also highlighted the importance of mentorship within the golf community, honoring the legacy of Russell Helwig, a four-time Bill Strausbaugh Award winner and a New Jersey PGA Hall of Famer.

Their discussions led to the creation of the Squire Cup, aimed at fostering competition, camaraderie and mentorship among the best in the field. With invaluable support from Wilson Sporting Goods, the original event quickly gained traction, uniting professionals from the Metropolitan and New Jersey Sections.
Beyond the competition, the Squire Cup served as a platform for seasoned Head Professionals to share their insights and experiences with their Assistant counterparts, reinforcing the notion that mentorship is key to professional growth.

As the New Jersey PGA looks to the future, this event is sure to become a cherished tradition, inspiring new generations of golf professionals through competition and mentorship. —Ethan Shea
To represent the U.S. Team at a PGA Cup event is a special honor. This feeling was captured by John Somers at the 2024 PGA Cup and Sandra Changkija and Stephanie Connelly-Eiswerth at the 2024 Women’s PGA Cup in September and October, respectively. Both events were held at the beautiful Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon.
The PGA Cup is a Ryder Cup-style event with the U.S. taking on Great Britian & Ireland; 10 players are on each team. Day 1 and Day 2 featured Four-Ball and Foursome matches; Day 3 was the Singles matches.
It didn’t take long for Somers to make an impact during his debut on Day 1 by making seven birdies and an eagle in the morning Four-Ball matches. He ended Day 1 going 2-0 and then capped off the Singles matches with a 2 & 1 win. John and the U.S. Team ended up winning this year’s PGA Cup 17.5 to 8.5.
The Women’s PGA Cup showcased the U.S. Team vs. teams from Australia, Canada, Great Britain & Ireland, South Africa and Sweden. Team Stroke Play scores per round are comprised of the lowest of three scores from the five players. In Rounds 1, 2 and 3, respectively, Sandra carded 2-over 73, 1-over 72, and 1-under 70. Stephanie went 1-under 70, even 71, and shot an impressive bogey-free 5-under 66 in the final round, earning her medalist honors. Sandra, Stephanie and the U.S. Team won this year’s Women’s PGA Cup by an impressive 12 strokes with a team score of 14-under 625.
The Section was thrilled to see John, Sandra and Stephanie represent their country and play a part in getting U.S. Team wins! —Brandon Roll, PGA

After 13 teams played 45 holes, that included a total of 400 birdies, the foundation raised nearly $95,000 in donations and pledges.
Congratulations to the Country Club of Pittsfield for bringing in the most funds of over $18,000 and also carding the most birdies with 48 in 45 holes! Team Pittsfield consisted of Director of Golf Eric Mabee, Head Golf Professional Thomas Sennett and Assistant Golf Professional Eddie Cano. Great job, boys!
A big special thank you to the rest of our 12 teams and to the entirety of those supporters and donors who supported the cause:

If he hadn’t broken his collarbone while playing junior hockey in the 8th grade, who knows where Max Lyons would be today.
Back then, when he was playing travel baseball and Elite AAA hockey with the Jr. Coyotes in Phoenix, golf was something he did with his father on Sunday evenings.
The collarbone injury required surgery and young Max decided that he was done with baseball and hockey. He would instead be a golfer.
It would have been hard to imagine then — impossible, really — that seven years later he would be standing in fading sunlight on a glorious summer evening in Wisconsin’s Northwoods, holding the trophy as the champion of the 104th Suter Ward Group Wiscsonsin State Open at Minocqua Country Club.
“Coming into this week, I didn’t even think about expectations,” said Lyons, a Marquette University senior. “A couple of my friends were playing in the event. I just wanted to see them and have fun.”
Max birdied five of the last seven holes, shot a 5-under 67 (following a 70 in the morning half of the 36-hole finale) and blew past everybody. It was such an in-the-zone performance that he had no idea he was leading. “I had no idea what was going on,” Lyons said, “and they told me I had the lead.”
Lyons finished the 72-hole tournament at 16-under 272. George Kneiser of Oconomowoc shot 67-67 over the 36-hole finale, climbed into second place at 14-under 274 and earned $13,700 as the Low Professional. Former UW player Griffin Barela closed with a course-record 63 and finished in a tie for third place.
The Wisconsin PGA would like to express our appreciation to the Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley for their continued sponsorship of the Wisconsin State Open and our supporting partners, TaylorMade Golf and Sentry. A big thank you also goes out to everyone at Minocqua C.C. —Gary D’Amato
