T
he third annual PGA Family Golf Championship is set for Labor Day Weekend (Aug. 30-31, 2025) at the renowned Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin, and it’s your turn to team up and play.
In addition to spending quality time with your family, this event is also a great opportunity to connect with fellow PGA of America Golf Professionals who are also participating with their families, creating memories of a lifetime.
The PGA Family Golf Championship features divisions to accommodate all families, including those for PGA of America and LPGA Professionals. Teams are made up of two-to-four players, who are either biologically or legally related.
In September, six PGA of America Members and their families participated in the second annual PGA Family Golf Championship at Disney’s Palm Golf Course operated by Arnold Palmer Golf Management in Lake Buena Vista, Florida:
•Ralph Landrum, PGA (World of Golf, Kentucky) and his sons Joe and Kyle;
•Danny Elkins, PGA (Georgia Golf Center) and wife Leslie;
•Dave DeSantis, PGA (Golf Galaxy, Salt Lake City, Utah), wife Holly and grandson Gordie Gatrell;
•Mike Abate, PGA (Charles T. Myers Golf Club, Charlotte, North Carolina) and his son Nicholas;
•Michael D’Agostino, PGA (Penfield Country Club, New York), and his son Anthony;
•Matt Montecucco, PGA (Chambers Bay, Tacoma, Washington), and his cousin Avery Marie Renggli.
These PGA of America Professionals had such a great time combining their passion for golf with quality family time that they want to encourage other Members to join them in 2025.
“Many PGA Members have families, and we don’t always have the ability to play golf with our families, especially with our schedules,” Montecucco said after playing in his first PGA Family Golf Championship with his 12-year old cousin, Avery. “This championship is not only a place where you can play golf with your family, but also be in a competitive atmosphere. I don’t get to play golf with my cousin very often, but when we had this opportunity, we couldn’t say no.”
In their first PGA Family Golf Championship, Elkins and his wife Leslie teamed up to capture the Professional/Adult Division.
“For me and my wife, the Family Golf Championship was a way for us to compete together,” Elkins said. “Both of us are reasonably competitive players within our niche communities, me at the Section level and Leslie in the senior women’s events at her club. It is uncommon for us to find an event where we can compete together as a team, and this allows us to do that.”
DeSantis, along with wife Holly and grandson Gordie Gatrell (pictured above), defended their title with a win in the Professional/Junior Division and plan to go for championship No. 3 next year.
“We will be back next year, and as many times as we can for sure,” said Gatrell, who teamed with his grandparents. “This was a great tournament, and we will be at Whistling Straits next year.”
Landrum teamed with his two adult sons, Kyle and Joe, in the Pro-Adult Division.
“It’s pretty special that I can be here with my kids and grandkids,” explained Landrum, who also serves as a member of the PGA of America Player Development Adult Committee.
Montecucco has a message and rally cry for his peers: “There are a lot of PGA Members with families out there, so let’s get it done.”
