PGA Magazine asked PGA of America Professionals, golf leaders and people who know new PGA of America President Don Rea Jr. to share their thoughts on him. Here’s what some of them told us:
• “When I was an officer in the Southwest PGA Section, I was always looking for the next generation of leaders who I could encourage, and that’s how I met Don. He was that guy at the Section meeting who wasn’t shy, wasn’t afraid to ask questions and get involved. I encouraged him to get involved, and it takes a certain type of person to run for national office. He sees how different a PGA of America Golf Professional’s needs are in Indiana vs. New England or Arizona, and he’s learned what’s important to each of them. I’m really proud of him and I’m very excited for the next two years.”
—Joe Shershenovich, PGA of America Director of Golf, Grayhawk Golf Club, Scottsdale, Arizona
• “Don is extremely dedicated to PGA of America Members and also to his family. He’s very protective of his family, and he always makes time for us. When he’s home, we always have morning coffee together, no phones or interruptions, and he always makes time for his son and daughter. It’s great to hear how excited people are about Don becoming President, and to see that he’s done it with honor and integrity.”
— Karen Rea, Don’s wife
•“PGA of America Golf Professionals should know that they’re getting an incredibly engaging, enthusiastic, forward-thinking and tireless guy as their new President. He didn’t grow up in the golf business, but as an owner-operator he’s learned every job you come across at a golf facility. He understands everything from the high-end financials and government advocacy down to what it’s like to pick the range, unload clubs from cars for guests and pick up trash in the parking lot. He lives and breathes it all, and is totally focused on how he can make things better for the rest of us PGA of America Members.”
—Curt Hudek, PGA of America Co-Owner, Augusta Ranch Golf Club, Mesa, Arizona
• “When I meet someone in golf, they always say, ‘Oh, you’re Don Rea’s daughter? He’s so proud of you!’ It gives me joy, and I’m so proud of him, too. He’s changed and grown during his PGA journey. He’s discovered his ‘why’ and become more vulnerable on his way to being PGA of America President.”
—Katie Rea, Don’s daughter
