Four students from Goose Creek CCISD were selected for the highly competitive Norman Borlaug Youth in Agriculture Program. This prestigious opportunity, offered by Texas 4-H Youth Livestock and Agriculture (TYLA) in collaboration with Texas A&M University, is designed for exceptional youth leaders who demonstrate outstanding talent, character, and leadership in the agriculture industry. Among the 50 positions available statewide, 25 were allocated to high school students from Harris County with notable leadership abilities and limited agricultural backgrounds to represent urban populations. The remaining 25 positions were reserved for experienced 4-H youth leaders with statewide offices, representing rural communities.
Keila Torres and MacKenzie Elliott, Stuart Career Tech High School, and Makenna Land, Goose Creek Memorial High School, were selected as representatives for the urban populations. Hannah Griffice, Goose Creek Memorial High School and a State 4-H Livestock Ambassador, was selected as a representative for the rural populations. Participants engaged in bi-weekly virtual meetings and three multi-day in-person sessions, collaborating with university and industry professionals to address global issues such as the environment, food insecurity, and cultural and legal policies. At the end of this 6-month program, each student was awarded a $2,500 educational grant for post-secondary education.
