Goose Creek CISD announces the important transformation within the educational community: the renaming of the Bilingual, ESL, and Migrant Department to the Multilingual and Migrant Department. This change is more than just a rebranding; it represents GCCISD’s commitment to better reflect the diverse linguistic landscape and the inclusive nature of the department’s objectives.
In a district where nearly 24,000 students bring a rich collective of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, with over 27 languages spoken, the new name, Multilingual and Migrant Department, acknowledges and honors this diversity. This shift underscores the importance of recognizing and honoring all languages and cultures represented among the students and families. By doing so, the districts hopes to foster a more inclusive and supportive educational environment that respects and celebrates linguistic diversity. The renaming aligns seamlessly with GCCISD’s strategic goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion. It is a clear statement of our district’s recognition of the crucial role that language plays in shaping identity, community, and educational success. With over 25% of the student population classified as emergent bilinguals, the urgent need for linguistic support and resources is evident. This change not only reaffirms the district’s dedication to these students but also highlights its proactive approach in addressing their unique needs.
The vision for the Multilingual and Migrant Department is to create an educational landscape where every student, regardless of their linguistic background, has equitable access to quality education. The department aims to provide comprehensive support systems that enable emergent bilinguals and migrant students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This involves not only language instruction but also cultural competency and engagement strategies that empower students and their families.
The Multilingual and Migrant Department will continue to implement innovative programs and initiatives designed to support the diverse student body. This includes professional development for educators to better understand and address the needs of multilingual learners, family engagement activities that bridge the gap between home and school, and community partnerships that provide additional resources and support.
The department’s new Associate Director, Zamira “Sam” Torres-Banda shared her excitement, “I am thrilled beyond words about our department’s transformation into the Multilingual and Migrant Department. This change reflects our district’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and embracing the richness that multiple languages and cultures bring to our community.”
GCCISD believes that students’ diverse linguistic backgrounds are an asset that enriches the entire school community. By changing the department’s name to Multilingual and Migrant, they are sending a powerful message that the district values and embraces this diversity. It is a testament to the district’s commitment to developing the whole child, preparing all students for a globalized world, where multilingualism and cultural awareness are invaluable skills.
Goose Creek CISD is dedicated to providing equitable access to education for all students. The renaming of our department is a significant step in this ongoing journey to ensure that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed.
