The final event of 2024 was one for the books. The 2024 Team Championship was held at Regatta Bay Golf & Yacht Club in Destin, Florida, and ended with two teams at the top of the leaderboard. Patrick Richardson/Brennan Dolnick and Brad Story/Jordan DeBonis finished 20-under - par to tie.
Each team consisted of two Alabama- NW Florida Section Professionals or Associates. The tournament format was 18 holes of Scramble for the first round, while the second round was 18 holes of Shamble.
In addition to the competition on the course, everyone was also fighting the weather. After the first round, the teams played another nine holes Monday afternoon, attempting to beat the storms. The final nine holes were played Tuesday morning to finish the tournament.
Richardson/Dolnick had a strong first round, shooting 12-under-par and taking a two-stroke lead ahead of Dylan Moncus/Cam Page and Mike Giammaresi/Madison Williams, who were in second.
Story/DeBonis had a great second round, shooting 12-under-par to jump from tied for sixth into a tie with Richardson/Dolnick. With the rain rolling in, the Championship was declared a tie in place of a playoff.
The Section would like to thank the E-Z-GO team of Luke Martin and Cam Bahler for their support. Thank you to host PGA of America Professional Mike Giammaresi and everyone at Regatta Bay for their help with this event. —Anna Catherine Alderman

The Georgia PGA’s Communications Committee engages its Section Members by hosting Member Mixers, where PGA of America Members and Associates gather to connect and learn about the impactful initiatives of the Georgia Section. The mixers are designed to help our members stay connected and welcome new members or transfer to the Georgia Section.
Although there are different topics at each mixer, the one held in December at the Sections office at Bobby Jones Golf Course focused on PGA REACH Georgia initiatives. The event spotlighted two key programs that are making a significant difference in the community: Her Shot and PGA HOPE.
Her Shot, part of the Foundation’s inclusive pillar, aims to introduce and encourage women of all backgrounds to engage with the game of golf. This program provides resources, coaching and opportunities to empower women both on and off the course, helping to create a more inclusive and diverse golf community. Thank you to Bria Janelle and the Bria Janelle Foundation for letting us help contribute and grow this program.
Another highlight was PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), a national program dedicated to helping military Veterans improve their physical and mental well-being through the game of golf. PGA HOPE provides therapeutic golf instruction to Veterans, offering them a unique path to healing and camaraderie while transitioning back to civilian life.
In addition to learning about these impactful programs, attendees had the chance to network with fellow Section Professionals, share experiences and discuss ways to get involved with PGA REACH Georgia’s initiatives. The event underscored the importance of community engagement and how members can leverage these programs to make a positive impact.
For those who couldn’t attend, the Georgia PGA will continue to provide updates on these and other programs. Members are encouraged to take full advantage of Member Mixers to help grow the game and support meaningful causes. —Michael Rakowski

At the heart of the Met Section’s PGA HOPE initiative stands Tamari Watkins, an exceptional individual whose journey epitomizes the power of perseverance and the life-changing impact of the PGA HOPE Program.
Tamari served our country with distinction, earning the rank of E-4 Specialist, and was honorably discharged in 1992. After tragically losing his son in 2020 in a car accident and not seeing a reason to go on, Tamari learned about PGA HOPE.
“Through PGA HOPE, I was introduced to Veterans who shared similar experiences and then I realized I’m not alone,” said Watkins. “The program got me out onto the golf course, breathing fresh air, and I became addicted to the game. It has brought me a lot of joy.”
Tamari attended classes at Spook Rock Golf Course before graduating from the program at Woodside Club on Long Island in 2021. After graduating, Tamari continued to work on his game and remained involved in everything PGA HOPE. He joined the Met Section’s Military Golf League through Southern Dutchess Country Club, assisted at PGA HOPE graduations, and volunteered at numerous charity events.
His involvement with PGA HOPE began as a participant, but it quickly evolved into a leadership role as his passion for the program and the game grew. Today, he joins fellow graduate and former HOPE Ambassador Jae Pea Persaud as our new Met PGA HOPE Ambassador, advocating for the program and encouraging fellow Veterans to take part. He is looking forward to helping PGA HOPE in the Met Section as he will tell you firsthand, “PGA HOPE saved my life.”
Tamari Watkins represents the heart and soul of the Metropolitan PGA HOPE Program—a testament to the power of golf to heal, unite and transform. His leadership and unwavering commitment to the Veteran community serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us all of the incredible impact that compassion, determination and a shared love for the game can achieve. Through his advocacy, Tamari aims to inspire greater support for PGA HOPE and similar initiatives, emphasizing the importance of mental health resources and community-building efforts for Veterans. —Emily Meier
The Section’s area PGA of America Professionals employed at the courses throughout Charlevoix and Emmet Counties usually don’t need an excuse to hit the links. A good excuse, or a bad one, it’s all part of the job. But the annual Harbor Cup Match? That’s about as good of a reason to get out on the course as any.
Aside from the golf and competition amongst friends, it’s also one of the largest charity events each year, with the 2024 Harbor Cup showcasing just how big it has been.
Recently, Team Harbor pulled out a 13.5 to 10.5 win in the Ryder Cup-style tournament, which took place at Bay Harbor Golf Club.
The other win was to raise around $69,000 toward local charities for Team Harbor and equally the same for Team Boyne, with the total amount raised over a 28-year span eclipsing $1 million for the event.
“There’s all kinds of records being set as far as passing $1 million for charity, raising over what I assume will be $140,000, just really neat stuff,” said Harbor Cup Golf Club Professional Shaun Bezilla, PGA.
Bezilla is currently the longest-tenured member of the Harbor Cup, having missed only one event through all 28 years.
He’s been through 12 Team Harbor wins, though Boyne leads the all-time series with a 16-12 record. Bezilla has also been along for the ride through all the charitable donations, from the First Tee of Northern Michigan, Manna Food Project, Camp Daggett, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Humane Society and many more.
What Bezilla has also loved is watching his peers compete.
“There’s only a handful of us who really play any kind of tournament golf anymore,” Bezilla said. “It’s the nature of the business. Clubs are busy and we’re asked to work more and do more, so for a lot of these guys, this is their favorite tournament of the year. It’s fun to compete and see what my friends can do under pressure. There are a lot of good golfers up here who don’t compete in the Michigan Open or whatever. It doesn’t mean they can’t, they just don’t get the opportunity.”
This year’s opportunity to compete came at Bay Harbor for the second time, though it was the first time the event was completed there.
“It was probably one of the largest crowds we’ve had in years,” Bezilla said. “We played it eight to 10 years ago, but the weather was terrible, and we only got the better-ball matches in. It snowed and sleeted. What a tremendous venue. Steve Niezgoda and the staff there did a great job.”
Team Harbor got off to a 5-1 start through four-ball the opening day, sweeping five of the six matches. Things stayed at the same pace in foursomes after a 3-3 tie, leaving it all to singles play on the final day.
Team Boyne got off to a hot start in singles, taking five of the opening six matches, then Team Harbor did just enough over the final handful of matches, falling 6.5 to 5.5, though taking the overall Cup.
Members of Team Harbor included: Bezilla, Tyler Johnson, Corey Crowell, Pete Makarov, Kevin McKinley, Kyle Roman, Harry Dixon, Brian Sanderson, Matt Shalhoup, Jason George, Robert Getzmeyer and Keith Grunch.
For Team Boyne, participants included: Chaz Babin, Nathan Kraynyk, Brian Jakeway, Benny Dieterle, Avry Freel, Corey May, Casey Powers, Scott Pussehl, Zach Zondlo, Bob Wilson, John Myers and Steve Niezgoda. —Diane Lazaros

As the 2024 golf season concluded, Northern Ohio PGA of America Professional Ron Tristano celebrated the culmination of a distinguished 33-year career at Edwin Shaw Challenge Golf (now Cleveland Clinic Challenge Golf).
For Tristano, who retired at the end of the year, his work at Challenge Golf represented a lifetime devoted to empowering others through the game he loves.
Tristano’s career in golf began in the early 1980s at Mogadore Golf Course (1980-83) and Chippewa Golf Course (1984-90). In 1989, while still at Chippewa, he volunteered to assist with adaptive golf classes hosted by Edwin Shaw Hospital. Deeply moved by the experience, Tristano’s contributions caught the attention of a board member, who later approached him with a request to join the facility full-time to oversee the program and the development of the golf course.
By February 1991, Tristano began his new role. The driving range opened in April 1992, followed by the course in June — a milestone he described as feeling guided by “a guardian angel.”
A PGA of America Member since 1986, Tristano has always championed the community spirit of golf.
“People need opportunity,” he said, reflecting on how golf could rebuild self-esteem and inspire hope, allowing people to become better versions of themselves, including being better spouses and parents despite dealing with a difficult health issue. Tristano’s work earned him accolades, including a 2001 Teacher of the Year nomination and his 2015 induction into the Northern Ohio PGA Hall of Fame.
Tristano’s favorite part of his work always has been the day-to-day satisfaction of witnessing smiles from individuals who overcame great challenges.

The PNW PGA Tournament Program has proven to be a dynamic force for philanthropy, making a significant impact on vital charities in local communities in 2024. We are thrilled to share the incredible achievements and generosity that our golf community displayed throughout the past year.
In 2024, the Muckleshoot Casino Washington Open contributed $45,000 each to both Folds of Honor and Friends of the American Lake Veterans G.C. Meanwhile, the Alaska Folds of Honor Championship added $19,000 to the cause, amplifying our commitment to supporting scholarships and assistance for the spouses and children of military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The 2024 Rosauers Open not only showcased top-tier golf, but also raised an impressive $160,000 for Vanessa Behan, Spokane’s safe haven for children at risk of abuse and neglect. These funds will bolster crucial services, including counseling, education and referrals for parents of young children in Eastern Washington.
In the fourth year of the PNW PGA 100 Hole Marathon, we collectively raised $65,595 for our local charities. In 2024, 46 PNW PGA of America Professionals participated, completing 100 holes each to drive donations to a charity of their choice. Twenty-eight of us played at Meadow Park – Williams 9, while the others played at various sites throughout the Oregon, Western Montana and Inland Empire Chapters. Every participant selected a charity they were passionate about to promote and help raise crucial funds for. Over the past four years of this event, we have contributed a total of $300,813 to our various charities.
Each swing, each donation and each act of kindness has played a part in creating a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most. —Marlena Cannon

A PGA of America Member since 2011, Chisholm started his professional career in the New Jersey PGA Section, working in the Section before being hired at Rolling Green as PGA Head Professional. He was promoted to his current role in 2022.
When Chisholm arrived at Rolling Green, he presented a roadmap to the club’s Board of Governors to address the facility’s challenges. As part of his plan, Chisholm expanded the golf staff, growing from a Head Golf Professional and two Assistant Professionals to a PGA Director of Golf, PGA Head Golf Professional, PGA Director of Instruction, four PGA Assistant Professionals, a Golf Shop Manager, and a Director of Outside Services.
Chisholm believes that one of his most important roles is to recruit, train and mentor the golf operations staff, and he claims to have one of the best staffs in the Philadelphia PGA Section, if not the country. He prides himself on creating a culture that is conducive to success, which includes setting clear expectations, leading by example, implementing standardized training and operating procedures, and communicating with continued feedback. Chisholm has helped two of his assistants be hired as PGA Head Professionals, and two more as PGA Directors of Instruction.
When Rolling Green undertook a course improvement plan with golf course architect Gil Hanse, Chisholm helped to lead the project. The end result returned the course to its reputation of being one of the best in the Section.
Chisholm is no stranger to Association service; he served on the New Jersey PGA Section’s Board of Directors in 2016-17, and currently serves as a District 6 Director on our Section’s board. —Matt Frey, PGA

Moving on up: The Section opens the month moving into its new office space in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, a few miles from downtown Pittsburgh and 10 miles from our previous location of eight years. The latest home offers additional private office space, cubicle space, a boardroom and storage that will serve the Section more efficiently — with six summer interns joining the team in May.
This move is extra exciting as our neighbors in the space is Section partner Links Brewing Company. We have developed an excellent relationship and partnership with owners Jeff Becker and Kylie Shevchik; new and creative opportunities are already flowing.
Golf Super Sunday: Our Tri-State PGA Junior Tour schedule is set, and individual tournament registration opens on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9, at 9 a.m. We expect tournament sellouts on Day 1, as the Section will again offer junior golf opportunities at many premier golf courses in the area. Isaly’s Chipped Chopped Ham and Ice Cream returns as the official sponsor of the junior tour. Their brand and support of golf and families in the Tri-State area is iconic and strong. We thank owner Jim Conroy for his tremendous support and partnership.
Meeting called to order: The Section closes the month by presenting our spring Board of Directors meeting at our new office space on Feb. 20. We will finalize our directives and mission for the 2025 season to present to our membership at our 102nd annual spring meeting in March. —Frank D. Murgia

A spot on the coveted Manuel de la Torre Trophy was up for grabs once again this past fall as the annual Wisconsin PGA Pro-Assistant visited Westmoor Country Club. The sold-out field of 113 players, represented 33 different facilities.
The Whistling Straits duo of Mike Aschenbach and David Bach caught a wave of momentum starting on their 11th hole. On the par-4 second, Aschenbach would roll in a massive 70-foot birdie putt to put a jolt into his group. Then Bach would drain his own long birdie on the very next hole.
With two more birdies on holes No. 4 and 6, the twosome was off to the races. That was until two-time champions Dan Hastreiter and Josh Grisa put up three birdies in a four-hole stretch, playing two groups behind them.
The challenge was short lived, however, as Bach would throw a pitching wedge to 10 feet on the par-5 8th and roll in an eagle. With a closing birdie by Aschenbach on the par-5 9th, the winning squad posted a 9-under-par 62 better ball.
It would be good enough to hold off Hastreiter and Grisa by two shots in the end. The impressive score matched the lowest known score on record in the event’s history.
Putting up a solid 5-under-par 66 and earning the win in Division Two was the Golf Galaxy duo of Foy Swenson and Brian Brodell.
The Wisconsin PGA would like to thank supporting sponsors Bushnell and the PGA TOUR. We’d also like to recognize and thank the membership and staff at Westmoor Country Club for hosting. The course was in great shape and held up unbelievably well to the three inches of rain it received the day prior. —Andy Landenberger
