ean Kandle, PGA of America General Manager at St. Davids Golf Club in Wayne, Pennsylvania, has found that weekly one-on-one meetings with his staff members are a simple yet transformative tool for building stronger teams and improving service levels.
Since implementing this practice in 2018, Kandle has seen the benefits of creating a dedicated space for open communication, feedback and goal setting.
“These 30-minute meetings are structured to build trust and accountability,” says Kandle, the 2020 Philadelphia PGA Section Golf Professional of the Year. “I keep the tone positive and supportive. It’s not just about performance; it’s also about understanding their goals, discussing upcoming events and even regularly checking in on their life outside of work.
Each session is divided into three segments: the first 10 minutes allow staff members to lead the discussion, sharing updates or raising any concerns. The next 10 minutes are for Kandle to provide informal feedback or follow up on projects, and the final segment focuses on planning for the future, whether it’s preparing for upcoming events or working on long-term career goals.
With Kandle’s approach, which emphasizes connectivity beyond the job, it’s no surprise he was named the national 2024 PGA of America Professional Development Award recipient. Recognizing that personal challenges often affect professional performance, he ensures these conversations address both work and life, showing his team that he’s genuinely invested in their overall well-being. By documenting each meeting, he keeps track of progress and demonstrates a commitment to his staff’s growth and success. The resulting benefits have been clear to see.
“Staff members appreciate the time and attention, which has strengthened our relationships and improved communication across the team,” Kandle continues. “These meetings have also led to higher service levels, as the team operates more cohesively with a clear sense of direction.”
For Kandle, the key is consistency and intentionality. Regular one-on-ones aren’t just about managing staff – they’re about empowering them. This practice has not only enhanced the culture at St. Davids Golf Club, but also underscored the importance of leadership that listens, supports and inspires employees.
