Connecting with the fans is what Duke Energy Senior IT application analyst Michael Leal likes best about being a part of the Carolina Panthers PurrCussion drumline.
Now, Leal has been given the opportunity to make a new connection—with armed forces members serving overseas—as part of the Panthers Entertainment team on a tour organized by Armed Forces Entertainment. “I jumped at the chance to represent the Panthers on this tour,” said Leal. “The folks I met were incredible; I got back more than I gave.”
The Panthers Entertainment group, consisting of team mascot Sir Purr, six TopCats cheerleaders and six PurrCussion drumline members, performed for more than 600 military personnel and family members at five bases in southwest Asia.
What stands out the most for Leal, who played drums in his middle and high school bands and has been with the PurrCussion drumline for four years, was seeing the troops’ reactions, meeting them and shaking their hands.
“To be able to go overseas and give these folks a taste of home was really special,” he said. “I enjoyed being able to make that connection and give them a break from their jobs for a little while.”
The service members’ professionalism and commitment to duty made a huge impression on Leal, who feels a deep sense of appreciation for the sacrifices they and their families have made. “I was honored and humbled to be a part of this,” he said. “These men and women have dedicated years of their lives to serve the greater cause of protecting our country.”
