Through CenterPoint Energy’s Power A Hero program, disabled veterans can rely on natural gas as insurance against a power outage.
Dealers participating in the utility’s Standby Generator Program partner with the Texas Sentinels Foundation to provide wounded warriors with a natural gas standby generator.
When Hurricane Ike hit, Marine Corps Cpl. Jack Goodroe, who uses a CPAP machine at night, had to stay with friends. Now, with his generator, he knows he can stay home. “That’s not only very reassuring, but it means I can return the favor and come to the aid of friends, should they lose power,” Goodroe said.
“Many of these wounded warriors deal with serious medical and mobility issues, so electricity is of great importance. In the event of a power outage, with the help of a standby generator, these brave veterans are able to move on with their daily lives,” Steve Landrum, product and services marketing manager for CenterPoint Energy, told American Gas. — Carolyn Kimmel
