Dark drama set in the near future when Christian fundamentalism controls America. Women are brutally subjugated, and the few who remain fertile are forced to become ‘handmaids’ and bear children for the ruling elite (charming!). Elisabeth Moss and Alexis Bledel (right) star. A spooky cross between Gossip Girl and Twin Peaks, Riverdale is an ambitious teen drama and one which has been a surprise hit with the critics. (Available on Netflix, ch 999 on Virgin TV)

Michael Fassbender relives his ancestor’s jumping, stabbing and spying memories in this big screen take on the popular game franchise. (Available to rent On Demand from €4.99)
▶ The Walking Dead
Seven seasons in, this series continues to shuffle on - as zombie apocalypse survivors contend with the undead and (much scarier) other humans, all against the backdrop of well manicured lawns. Society may have gone to pot but the gardens look great. (Tuesdays, 10.50pm on RTE2, ch 102)

Fans of four-part harmony and choral music will love this as vocal groups seek to impress judges Gareth Malone, Kelis, and a guest adjudicator for a place in the Grand Final. Real, wholesome talent plus the great Mel Giedroyc as host. What’s not to love! (Saturdays, 7.30pm, BBC1, ch 108)
