The Women’s Texas Pinehurst will be making a jaunt to Gus Wortham Golf Course in Houston from Nov. 3-4, with an enthusiastic group of players from near and far looking forward to meeting up for the last full-field event of the season.
And with a scenic routing that winds through 151 acres of beautiful, wooded green space along Brays Bayou, Gus Wortham is sure to provide an excellent setting for the fall get-together.
“We are thrilled to have such an historic venue as Gus Wortham Golf Course hosting this year’s Women’s Texas Pinehurst,” said Kristi Knight, TGA Director of Women’s Golf. “Gus Wortham has long been one of the most iconic and beloved public layouts in Houston, and I’m sure the players will relish the opportunity to compete on this fantastic course.”
Located just minutes east of downtown, Gus Wortham has a deep-rooted heritage dating back to 1908, when the original Houston Country Club was built on the site. In 1957, it became the Houston Executive Club and then in 1972 the facility was purchased by the City of Houston and renamed Gus Wortham Park Golf Course. It is the oldest 18-hole golf course in Texas, receiving continuous play for well over a century.
After numerous piecemeal upgrades throughout the years, architect Baxter Spann oversaw an extensive course restoration project in 2017 which included rebuilding tees, greens, bunkers and reshaping contouring. Highlighted by naturally varying topography, wide playing areas framed by groves of hardwood trees, the par-71 layout is a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels.
“The course is very engaging from tee to green with a great mix of holes,” Knight said. “It will be a wonderful test for the players and is sure to provide plenty of fun and excitement to close out another terrific year of competition.”
The 13th edition of the championship at the historic Houston layout will be contested over 36 holes of Chapman Stroke Play, also known as Pinehurst format. In this format, two players play as partners, with each playing from the teeing ground and each playing her partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, partners select the ball with which they wish to score and then play the ball alternately to complete the hole. The field size is limited to 50 teams (100 players) and will be separated into flight divisions based on players’ combined handicap indexes.
At the 2024 Women’s Texas Pinehurst, held at Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls, Patthawan Livingston of Helotes and Tammy Trichell of New Braunfels made a satisfying trip to the winner’s circle after finishing runner-up the previous year. The duo teamed up for rounds of 78-72 to post an 8-over-par 150 total and a one-stroke victory over the teams of Elizabeth Scaggs of Anna and Carol Turnage of Dallas and Sally Bowman and Lee Ann Penick, both of Austin.
