Josh Troyer
Imparting knowledge and inspiring coaches
Ever since he became a PGA professional in 2012, Josh Troyer has been passionate about teaching and coaching. However, due to his head professional responsibilities at a Greeley, Colorado-based country club, he was unable to teach as often as he’d like.
That all changed in 2019. Early that year, a friend asked if he’d like to work for GOLFTEC, which had an opening for a certified personal coach. The opportunity not only enabled him to work for a renowned organization but also use his talents as a full-time instructor.
“When I started at GOLFTEC, I desired to have a role with the Teaching Quality team someday,” Troyer said. “For my first three years at GOLFTEC, I taught thousands of lessons and was always open to learning and improving. And then the opportunity arose — to join the TQ team at GOLFTEC’s headquarters.”
Since February 2022, Troyer has served as GOLFTEC’s director of TQ. Through this role, he has been responsible for training and educating every single GOLFTEC coach. Currently, GOLFTEC has approximately 1,000 coaches; it onboards roughly 150 to 200 coaches annually.
“The education we provide includes how to use our technology, how to structure a golf lesson, how to fix swing faults and how to structure an improvement plan for a student,” he said. “We also build education and training content on the business side of coaching for current and new coaches alike.”
While doing so, Troyer and his TQ team strive to create new and innovative methods that GOLFTEC coaches can implement as they focus on becoming the best in the business. As he teaches these methods to coaches, Troyer loves to simultaneously mentor, aspire and help them achieve long-term success.
“It’s awesome to not only see my TQ team members be successful, but coaches companywide too,” he said. “I’ve always had a passion for helping others, and this role gives me the ability to do that every day.”
Upon reflecting on his last three years as director of TQ, he believes mentoring has been the “coolest part” of his job. He especially loves to see coaches succeed and receive positive feedback from their students. On a daily basis, he simply can’t wait to guide his TQ team members and help them develop their careers.
The primary reason? For decades, he has been mentored by others, from family members to PGA professionals. Every mentor has encouraged him along the way, leading him to where he is today. And now he wants to offer the same support and encouragement to each of his TQ team members.
“I love helping people,” Troyer emphasized. “Coaches’ successes drive me every day.”
As Troyer has climbed the ladder of his career, he’s never lost sight of his roots. Originally, his father and grandfather inspired him to pursue golf at an early age. They also taught him about accountability and honesty, two character traits he uses daily. In addition, he learned that his successes are attributed to his work ethic and dedication.
This dedication remains fully intact today. In fact, he’s just as passionate about the game now as he was then — a passion that led him to attend the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, earn a bachelor of science in Professional Golf Management and ultimately influence thousands of other people who are avid coaches like him.
“I want to continue to develop and inspire coaches through the training and education we deliver at GOLFTEC,” Troyer concluded. “I hope I can positively influence many more coaches in the future.”
