Matt Borocz
Building a positive environment at TPC Sawgrass
While growing up in Strongsville, Ohio, Matt Borocz, general manager at TPC Sawgrass, worked at his local golf course, Pine Hills Golf Club.
This job – along with the many rounds of golf he played – led him to become highly passionate about the game. By the time he attended Coastal Carolina University, he knew exactly what he wanted to do: pursue a career in the golf industry.
So, he enrolled in the Professional Golf Management program and accepted a practice facility attendant position at TPC Myrtle Beach in 1999, where he was ultimately promoted to assistant golf professional. From there, he received another assistant golf professional opportunity – at TPC Sawgrass, where he began working one week prior to the 2004 Players Championship. He quickly advanced, from interim head golf professional in January 2006 to permanent head golf professional in May 2007. Eventually, he progressed even further, accepting the assistant general manager/director of golf role in August 2013 and the general manager position in April 2025.
As Borocz reflects on the past 26 years, he is grateful to have had an opportunity to work at TPC Myrtle Beach and be introduced to the TPC Network. Through this introduction, he has since acquired his dream job, while working day in and day out at a course he used to watch on television as a child.
“My greatest memories are the people that I worked with at TPC Myrtle Beach,” he said. “Two of the PGA professionals that mentored me are general managers in the TPC Network.”
“Every year is a new and exciting challenge to keep elevating the Players in all areas.”
By working around so many great people, Borocz has been inspired to do better while preparing for his current role’s daily responsibilities. At the core, he’s focused on his accountability to TPC Sawgrass team members, along with the ways he can ensure it’s a great environment to work.
“TPC Sawgrass is a dynamic property and we are always working to improve and strive for excellence,” he said. “If the team is happy, we are going to perform and keep elevating our potential.”
In preparation for the future, he has a personal goal: to build upon the excellent foundation of his team members, while continuously providing them “a positive environment that highlights the PGA Tour and TPC Sawgrass.”
Through his role, Borocz has personally witnessed the effect that a positive environment and excellent foundation can have on employees – whether they’re in accounting, agronomy, food and beverage, golf operations, membership or sales. He has also observed the influence that such an environment has on the Players Championship itself.
“Every year is a new and exciting challenge to keep elevating the Players in all areas,” he said. “After all, TPC Sawgrass exists to be the home of the Players.”
Aside from his work at TPC Sawgrass, Borocz has volunteered in various ways. He first became involved as a volunteer for the North Florida PGA Section in 2019. Since then, he has served as secretary, vice president and president. Joining several other volunteers, he has enhanced local golf professionals’ careers, educated locals about the game, hosted tournaments and served as a positive golf steward.
Additionally, he has been recognized by fellow PGA professionals as the section’s Merchandiser of the Year (2014) and Golf Professional of the Year (2018), while earning the Bill Strausbaugh Award in 2023.
“This recognition is humbling and an honor,” he added. “I am truly living a dream.”
