A field of 144 players took on one of Donald Ross’ most picturesque courses, with views of the Charlotte Skyline tucked behind greens and fairways alike. Despite minor rain showers during the morning of Round 1, the 100th Carolinas Open thrived with stellar weather at the gorgeous Myers Park Country Club. It was Seth Sweet, the Assistant Professional from Chechessee Creek Club, who claimed the victory following three days of play. Sweet carded six birdies during the final round to give him a low tournament round of 66 following rounds of 67 and 68.
“Today I just stayed patient. I didn’t really try to get too aggressive early on,” Sweet commented following his win at 12-under. “To be quite honest with you, I’m still learning how to play these three-day tournaments and it seems like I’m getting a little better each time.”
Sweet also won the 36-hole 2024 CPGA Players Championship held at Berkeley Hall Club back in March of this year.
Low amateur for the 100th Carolinas Open was a junior on the Furman University men’s golf team, Zach Frazer, from Greenville, South Carolina. Frazer finished Round 3 with a 67 to put him at 10-under for the tournament. Alan Van Asch (amateur), a junior on the University of Lynchburg men’s golf team, carded a 69, which included an impressive eagle on the par-5 17th hole. Van Asch led the first two rounds of the tournament. Branden Boyce (amateur), a junior on the University of North Carolina at Greensboro men’s golf team, and Matthew Doyle (amateur), a senior on the Elon University men’s golf team, tied for fourth place at 8-under. Both players carded eagles on the par-5 sixth hole. —Jess Hanson
PGA of America Golf Professional Michael Deuel earned his first career Central New York PGA Senior Championship title July 23. The annual 36-hole tournament for Section players 50 and over took place July 22-23 at Green Lakes State Park Golf Course.
Deuel (En-Joie G.C.), who has chalked up four top-five finishes the last four years, fired back-to-back rounds of 67 to claim the title over defending champion Dennis Colligan, PGA (Cazenovia G.C.).
Deuel, who is also the reigning CNY PGA Section Champion, said it was gratifying to place first against his peers.
“It’s great,” he said. “It’s very satisfying to have won three regular Section Championships and being close multiple times in the Senior Division. So being able to cross the finish line feels pretty darn good.”
Both Deuel and Colligan secured berths in last month’s Senior PGA Professional Championship at Sunriver Resort in Oregon.
Also qualifying for the national Senior PGA Professional Championship was 2022 Senior Section Champion Eric Manning (Elm Tree G.C.). He earned the third spot after winning a three-hole playoff against Jay Turcsik (Mark Twain G.C.).

Eventful Month for Section
A busy month of October will kick off with the Connecticut Section PGA Professional Championship held at Longmeadow Country Club on Oct. 1-2. Defending champion Andy Svoboda has since left the Section and left the title open for a new champion to claim.
The Foundation’s third annual Birdies Fore Brighter Futures fundraiser will take place on Oct. 17 at Shuttle Meadow Country Club. The proceeds will be split evenly between the Connecticut Section PGA Golf Foundation and Connecticut Children’s, a major children’s hospital in the state. In its first two years the event has raised over $170,000 and has become a highlight of the season.
Each two-person team that is entered in this event is issued an air horn. When a team records a birdie, or better, they sound their horn, meaning more dollars for charity. It’s a fun day with lots of horn blasts.
Earlier this season, at the historic Shennecossett Golf Course, the 42nd Connecticut Senior Open was played. This year’s champion was Francis Quinn of Holden, Massachusetts, with a 36-hole total of 8-under-par.
The Section’s Summer Pro-Pro was played on the shores of Connecticut at Madison Country Club. Emerging victorious in this stableford contest was the team of Bob Mucha of Edgewood Golf Course and David Wright from Cold Spring Country Club with 43 points. Finishing second was the team of Kyle Gallo of Full Circle Golf and PGA of America Member Kyle Hedstrom. —Ted Pisk

Siller’s Legacy Lives On
Deceased PGA of America Member Gene Siller’s legacy lives on through the Gene Siller Memorial Grant (GSMG) facilitated by PGA REACH Georgia. The mission is to provide financial assistance to young golfers throughout the state by supporting those looking to learn, play and compete in junior golf initiatives.
Since 2021, the Gene Siller Red Pants Memorial Tournament has served as a fundraiser to help provide the funds to deserving junior golfers through the GSMG. For the first three years, the event was held at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw — where Gene was last employed before being shot to death in July of 2021 after witnessing a crime in progress — and this year’s event was at St. Ives Country Club in Johns Creek. St. Ives was a prior club that he worked at and the membership really came together to help the tournament raise $100,000 in the 21-team, Pro-Am (one professional, four amateurs) event. The event had a silent auction that many PGA of America Professionals donated to, that helped contribute $20,000 to the grand total.
“We had an incredible loss,” said Ashley Siller, Gene’s wife. “And what I realized after he left the world was that the loss was bigger and greater than beyond just our family. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to grow this grant and see Gene’s legacy live on.”
Thank you to Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Four Roses Bourbon, and many others for sponsoring the Gene Siller Red Pants Memorial Tournament. To learn more about the grant, please visit georgiapga.com/foundation. —Michael Rakowski
The Louisiana Chapter Championship was held at OakWing Golf Club in Alexandria this summer. Featuring both the Chapter Championship and Senior Chapter Championship, there were 31 participants. Kyle Ramey, Mississippi PGA of America Member from Canebrake Golf & Country Club, took Low Professional honors with a score of 69-71—140. Jon Howell of Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Mississippi, finished tied with Aubrey at 74-71—145.
In a post-round interview, Emlyn commented, “I think I made one double and three bogeys total for 36 holes, so I hit it very well. I’m looking forward to playing in more of these tournaments. I really enjoy seeing a lot of my old friends and just getting to catch up with them means as much as this trophy.”
The Gulf States PGA extends its appreciation to title sponsor Golf Cars of Louisiana and Club Car. We would also like to thank StrackaLine, Golf Sign and Design, Maui Jim, and the PGA TOUR. Finally, the Gulf States wishes to thank PGA of America General Manager Brady Noland, PGA of America Head Professional Robbie Gueringer, Golf Course Superintendent Donald Jones, and the entire staff and membership at OakWing Golf Club for their assistance in making this event possible. —Presley Baggett Ladner

In the end, it was Charlie Nikitas (Glenview, Illinois) notching his first professional victory. Nikitas carded rounds of 69, 69 and 71 for a three-round total of 7-under-par 209.
“This is the coolest thing ever. I’ve wanted to win this tournament since I started playing golf,” said Nikitas. “There’s a lot of cool names on this trophy. A lot of people that I’m friends with, and it just means the world to me. I can’t really explain it, I’m just so excited.”
Andy Svoboda (Oak Brook, Illinois) won the Low PGA Professional Award, finishing T7 at 3-under-par 213.
Sam Bradberry, PGA, is the 2024 Illinois PGA Senior Masters honoree. Sam was recognized on July 29 at Onwentsia Club.
The Illinois PGA has been honoring a select few of its members as Illinois PGA Senior Masters each year, having done so since 1993. Being honored as a Senior Master recognizes a career-long dedication to growing and promoting the game of golf. Senior Master honorees exemplify the role of the PGA Golf Professional within the community by displaying, through their actions, the values of honor and integrity that are so much a part of the game of golf.
“I’m very humbled and thrilled to receive this award,” said Bradberry. “It’s nice to get recognized for 43 years of hard work and dedication to this game. This gives me a sense of credibility and accomplishment for always believing in myself.
“I’m so thrilled about this that I might go back in as an Assistant for another 40 years!” —Kevin Quinn
The Senior PGA Professional Championship at Pine Valley Country Club concluded on Aug. 6 after two hot days of competition. Amidst the heat, one player emerged head and shoulders above the rest — Dave Pugh secured the championship with a stellar performance, finishing at 11-under-par.
Pugh’s scorecard over the 36 holes was nothing short of remarkable. He played a flawless, bogey-free round that included eight birdies and two eagles. His consistent and aggressive play set him apart from his competitors, leading to a decisive victory.
The final round featured a competitive lead group consisting of Pugh (11-under), Craig Bowden (6-under) and Jeff Marsh (1-under). Bowden, who tallied 10 birdies over 36 holes, and Marsh, who rounded out the top three, could not catch up to Pugh’s commanding lead.
In a post-round interview, Pugh reflected on the significance of this victory: “Well, I got beat four times last year in playoffs, so it’s finally nice to not be in a playoff,” Pugh said. “I was a little bit nervous, and I need that, especially if I’m going to go out to Oregon and compete (in last month’s national Senior PGA Professional Championship). I need to get that under my belt, so it was good.”
When asked if he was aware of his standing throughout the day, Pugh responded, “I am a leaderboard watcher, but not crazy. So, I knew where I was, checking in throughout.”
As for Pugh’s appearance in the national PGA Senior Professional Championship on Sept. 26-29 at Sunriver Resort in Oregon, he had this to say pre-Championship: “To be honest with you, it’s a lifelong goal to get into one of the PGA of America Member Championships.” —Renee Adam

New York State Open Excitement Led by Ballo
The test of New York State’s finest professional and amateur golfers returned in exciting fashion. The 47th annual New York State Open Championship was once again hosted at Bethpage State Park’s famed Black Course, host of the 2019 PGA Championship and future host of the 2025 Ryder Cup. This year’s New York State Open was once again sponsored by Lenox Advisors and National Financial Partners, two of the country’s leading wealth advisory firms.
The final round saw a see-saw battle between two highly decorated players in the Met Area, Josh Goldenberg of Atlantic Golf Club and Peter Ballo of The Connecticut Golf Club. Both players would get off to hot starts with birdies on holes 2 and 4, but Goldenberg’s bogey on No. 3 meant the two were tied at the turn.
Ballo quickly opened a four-shot lead after playing holes 10 and 11 at 1-under par, with Goldenberg struggling with a bogey and double bogey on the same holes. However, fortunes flipped for Goldenberg as birdies on holes 12, 13 and 16 helped him catch and pass Ballo on the leaderboard at 10-under-par after Ballo’s bogeys on holes 12 and 14 dropped him to 9-under-par. A bogey on hole 17 for Goldenberg to Ballo’s par saw the pair level once again, setting the stage for an eventful final hole.
After their drives found the fairway, Ballo struck first, nearly holing his approach shot which settled a foot from the cup. Knowing what was at stake, Goldenberg hit his approach to 12 feet. Needing to make the putt to force extra holes, Goldenberg’s effort just slid past the hole and he settled for par. With one hand on the trophy, Ballo tapped in his birdie putt and claimed the 47th annual New York State Open Championship.
This is Ballo’s first win in the event after a number of close calls. He joins his brother, Mike Ballo Jr., winner in 2019, as a proud champion of this great event. —Emily Meier
The top playing Michigan Senior PGA of America Professionals were back in Northern Michigan as Hidden River Golf & Casting Club in Brutus played host to the Michigan Senior PGA Championship. Fifty-five Michigan PGA of America Professionals teed it up to compete for the title as well as eight qualifying spots for last month’s National Senior PGA Professional Championship at Sun River (Oregon) Resort.
After Round 1 it was Chad Kurmel, Assistant Golf Coach at Michigan State University, who held the lead after shooting a 4-under-par round of 68. The lead was only one shot as 2020 Champion Scott Hebert, Traverse City Golf & Country Club, fired a 3-under round of 69.
Defending Champion Jim Deiters, Midland Country Club, made a run but finished one shot back of the playoff.
By finishing in the top eight, Chad, Jim and Scott qualifed for the 2024 Senior PGA Professional National Championship. Scott is also exempt for the Senior PGA National Championship after winning this event in 2019.
Those also qualifying and representing the Michigan Section nationally last month were Jeff Roth, BOYNE Golf Academy; Scott Brotebeck, Walnut Creek Golf & Country Club; Matt Zavadil, PGA Life Member; Jordan Young, Jordan Young Golf; and Kevin Muir, The Wyndgate. Kevin and Jordan picked up the last two spots in a five-for-two playoff.
In the Super Senior 70 and older division, PGA Life Member Randy Erskine took home top honors with rounds of 73-70.
We would like to thank host site Hidden River Golf & Casting Club. We would also like to thank Doug Dingwall for his generous support of this event and the Michigan PGA Senior Organization. Thanks also to our national sponsors, the PGA TOUR and Golf Channel.
Adam Schumacher of Point O’Woods Country Club is a first-time winner of the Michigan National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship after five prior starts with his best finish being T-3 back in 2021.
Fifty Michigan PGA Section Assistants teed it up at Kent Country Club, competing not only for the trophy but also three spots in the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship taking place Nov. 14-17 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Schumacher fired off impressive rounds of 69-70 on a tough course to put himself 3-under for the tournament and earning the first qualifying spot, narrowly escaping runner-up Baker Stevenson of Meadowbrook Country Club, who finished at 2-under-par.
Although Stevenson placed second, he is ineligible to advance to the national Assistant PGA Professional Championship due to his Associate status. Therefore, the second qualifying spot was awarded to third-place finisher Ryan Bayer from Kent Country Club. Bayer had rounds of 71-70 to finish 1-under-par.
The last qualifying spot came down to a playoff between Justin McPhail of Traverse City Golf & Country Club and Joshua Proben of Western Golf and Country Club. Both players were tied for fourth place at even par. McPhail and Proben played the par-4 18th to determine the qualifier and the first alternate. McPhail came out on top capturing the last qualifying spot, with Proben claiming the first alternate.
We would like to give a huge thank you to Kent Country Club for being such an incredible host venue. Thanks also to our title sponsor National Car Rental and presenting sponsors Srixon, Cleveland Golf, Asics and the PGA TOUR. —Diane Lazaros
PGA HOPE Play Days Create Lasting Memories
The MAPGA recently held three PGA HOPE Play Days for our Veterans who have graduated from PGA HOPE. Special thanks to Willow Oaks C.C., Bay Creek Resort and Oak Creek G.C. Some Veterans drove up to four hours to participate. We were excited to welcome Veterans from as far north as Baltimore and Frederick, Maryland, and as far south as Virginia Beach. The clubs hosted scrambles and had some fun contests, as well.
The best part of the day was the camaraderie shared amongst the Veterans in attendance. There were lots of swapping stories about their military service, as well as their experiences with the game of golf. Several Veterans exchanged contact information so that they could link up again in the future to play some more golf with one another. We look forward to more HOPE Play Days in 2024 and beyond!
Congratulations to the husband-wife duo of Paige Gross (Club at Creighton Farms) and Larkin Gross (Westwood C.C.) for both qualifying for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida, this November. The husband/wife team qualified first and second in the qualifier. Also representing the MAPGA will be Alex Hoffman (Columbia C.C.) and Anthony DeFrank (TPC Potomac). Good luck to all!
Bill Fedder won the 2024 MAPGA Professional Championship, his first, at Hermitage Country Club (Manakin Course) after shooting a total score of 7-under-par 209 and winning a two-hole playoff over Steve Delmar (Columbia C.C.). Fedder chipped in on his 52nd hole of stroke play and the first hole of the playoff to stay alive, and then won with a par on the second playoff hole.
Both PGA of America Associates parred 18 and then 17 again, and then both bogeyed 18 on the fourth playoff hole to keep the playoff going. They headed back to 18, and this time Moles made a 30-foot birdie, but Hoffman topped him from 25 feet! Incredibly, the playoff was still alive. The Maryland Open Champion was finally determined on the sixth playoff hole, when Hoffman made a two-putt par and Moles was unable to get up and down from the greenside bunker.
Alex took home $7,200 for the win. Special thanks to the MSGA for running a great event and to Talbot C.C. and PGA of America Professional Marc Kimminau for hosting. —Emma Smithers
Russell Ruins Everyone Else’s Championship Hopes
It looked like it was going to be a Championship plagued by weather delay after weather delay. However, Mother Nature did cooperate long enough to complete the first two rounds of the Midwest PGA Professional Championship at Millwood Golf & Racquet Club.
Players got 36 holes in on Monday, Aug. 12 and could not have asked for much better weather. However, that all changed during the final round on Aug. 13 as inclement weather rolled in and delayed play for three hours.
It was a championship where two golfers found themselves atop the leaderboard over the three rounds. Austin Jarchow, PGA, found himself one shot back going into the final round trying to catch the leader, Robert Russell, PGA. It was back and forth during the final round as both players were tied approaching the tough 16th hole.
Russell hit the shot of the tournament, sticking his approach shot to about four feet where he eventually went on to make birdie. Russell would go on to finish the Championship 10-under and clear Jarchow by three strokes. Joining Russell and Jarchow at the national 2025 PGA Professional Championship is Austin Hardison, PGA, who finished 4-under in sole third place finish. Our alternates in order are Ryan Dunham, Jeff Sedorcek and Loel Fischer. Thank you to all the players who made it a great championship and all our sponsors who made a championship like this possible.
Most importantly, we would like to thank Dan Schumacher, Chris Obert and the entire Millwood staff who were great hosts and allowed us to use their wonderful facilities over three days. We are already looking forward to our 2025 Midwest PGA Professional Championship. —Nolan Becerra
Hazeltine National to Host Section’s Fall Meeting
Fall golf is great golf! We hope everyone is enjoying the end of the golf season in the north.
We look forward to our Fall Meeting at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Thank you to those who have volunteered their time and efforts to make the Section better, and welcome to all of the new officers and board of directors.
Speaking of Hazeltine National, congratulations to PGA of America Professionals Phil Anderson, GM, Kyle Brandt, Head Professional, and their team at Hazeltine National for a successful 124th USGA Amateur Championship. Kudos also to host Professional John Kellin, PGA, at Chaska Town Course that was the “sister” club for the qualifier for the Championship. The Section also had a wonderful day at The Loop in Chaska with a junior golf event, followed by a day with PGA of America Professionals and HOPE graduates — what a great day! Thanks to John Young, PGA, at The Loop for hosting many great events during the week.
Congratulations to Zac Gavlak, PGA, for being named GM at the new Mapleton Golf Club in South Dakota. We have heard great things and look forward to seeing the new facility soon.

Bogle Selected as a National PGA HOPE Ambassador
PGA REACH Nebraska is excited to announce that 2023 PGA HOPE Nebraska graduate Amber Bogle has been selected as a national ambassador for the program. She’s set to attend the 2024 PGA HOPE National Golf & Wellness Week, marking the fourth Nebraska graduate to do so.
Just over a year ago, Bogle, who considered herself a softball player for life, had never really played golf before. Golf wasn’t a part of her life, yet. Until one day while sitting at home scrolling on her phone, an email notification popped up. It was from the Department of Veterans Affairs. “Free golf for Veterans,” Bogle read to herself.
During a time when she needed something the most, she decided a new hobby could be beneficial. It was that very decision, to sign up and give both golf and PGA HOPE a try, that changed her life forever.
After graduating from the PGA HOPE program, Bogle stayed very engaged. She volunteered at PGA HOPE programs in both Lincoln and Omaha, was named to the PGA HOPE Nebraska’s first ‘Squadron,’ and more.

Marek Strikes Gold in the NCPGA Section Championship
PGA of America Professional Brad Marek from Corica Park has been one of the top players in Northern California since becoming a PGA of America Member in 2019.
In that time, Brad qualified for multiple national PGA Professional Championships and he played in two PGA Championships, which included making the cut in 2021. Brad also represented the United States in the biannual PGA Cup vs. GB&I last month at Sunriver Resort. With all these accomplishments, Brad was still missing a NCPGA major on his resume. This all changed at The Olympic Club.
The Section Championship players were tested not only by the newly renovated Lake Course at The Olympic Club by Gil Hanse, but also by the famous San Francisco weather. As former Olympic Club member Mark Twain once said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” While the sun did try to make an appearance to warm up the players, it was mostly a rarity over the two days.
Despite all these challenges, Brad was a man on a mission. In Round 1, he was the only player to come in under par at 2-under 69 and had a two-shot lead going into the final round. In the final round, Marek navigated the front nine in even-par to still enjoy a two-shot lead. As Brad was making the turn, PGA of America Professional Andrew Larkin from Santa Clara University was making a charge. Andrew birdied on 10 and 11 to move into a tie for the lead at 2-under-par. Brad standing on the 12th tee was in unfamiliar waters for this tournament. He responded with birding 12 and 14 to get to 4-under for the tournament. Andrew made a costly bogey on the par-5 16th to slip to 1-under. Andrew responded with a birdie on 18 to finish at a tournament low 3-under-par 68 for a two-day total of 2-under-par 140. Brad had a two-shot cushion standing on the 18th tee. He navigated the tricky 18th to finish at 1-under- par 70 for the final and a tournament total of 139 to claim the NCPGA Section Championship and a spot in the 2025 PGA Professional Championship.

On behalf of the Search Committee, please join me in congratulating and welcoming Caitlyn as our new Executive Director for the Northern California PGA! —Shelby Zell
Radcliff Grows Game in Rural Ohio
Stephen Radcliff’s tenure at Pike Run Golf Club has been nothing short of transformative, both for the club and the many PGA of America Professionals who have crossed paths with him. Since starting at Pike Run in 1999 at 29 years old, Radcliff’s passion for the game and dedication to service have become the heartbeat of this rural, 18-hole public facility in Northwest Ohio.
Over the years, Radcliff has mentored a remarkable roster of PGA of America Professionals, including Jordan Schroeder, Head Professional at Findlay Country Club; Jason Niese, now Head Professional at The Club at Chatham Hills; and Jared Nelson, First Assistant at Boulder Ridge Country Club. Nathan Ellerbrock, Superintendent at NCR Club, also spent formative years at Pike Run.
Even those who didn’t work directly under Radcliff, like PGA Career Consultant Garrett Korte, found inspiration in his quiet leadership.
“Steve’s passion for people and the game made me want to be a PGA Member,” Korte recalls, crediting Radcliff with steering him toward a rewarding career in golf.
During a 30-minute conversation while Korte was in college, he and Radcliff talked about all aspects of the industry and Radcliff shared how incredibly rewarding it had been for his life, and that he thought Korte would be a great candidate for PGA of America Membership.
Radcliff believes that working at a rural golf course offers unparalleled rewards. “The relationships you build in a small community are like family,” he says, emphasizing the deep connections forged in such environments.
His love for the job is evident in his daily routine, which includes everything from giving lessons to arranging outings and handling administrative duties. Radcliff’s versatility and dedication have not only elevated the member experience but also helped Pike Run raise nearly $400,000 for local charities through 31 benefit outings this year alone. —Danielle Monas

Von Lossow is Victorious
The 37th annual Rosauers Open Invitational at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, Washington, on July 19-21 showcased a thrilling competition despite scorching temperatures reaching 107 degrees. Andrew Von Lossow, an amateur from The Creek at Qualchan, emerged victorious by one stroke.
The tournament began with temperatures rising steadily, but the heat didn’t stop low scores on the first day. Von Lossow and fellow amateur Dean Dalton each shot a 65 to take the early lead. Day 2 brought more challenges, with amateur Cort Benner posting the low round of 63. By the end of the day, PGA of America Professional Russell Grove shared the lead with Dalton and Benner at 132, with Von Lossow just one stroke behind.
The final round, held on the hottest day, saw Von Lossow surge ahead with a 4-under front nine. He maintained his composure on the back nine, shooting an even-par 36 to secure his first major win at the Rosauers Open with a total score of 200 (65-68-67), outlasting PGA of America Professionals Bryce Fisher and Corey Prugh.
Von Lossow described his victory as a “dream come true” and particularly meaningful as it took place in his hometown with support from family and friends, including his father, Jim Von Lossow, who caddied for him. Reflecting on his final putt, Andrew noted the pressure but relied on his practice, feeling both confidence and relief when the ball dropped.
The event also featured the 37th Franz Pro-Am, which raised $160,000 for the Vanessa Behan charity. The Reser’s Fine Foods team, led by PGA of America Professional David Brown, won the two-day event with a score of 237.
Special thanks were extended to Indian Canyon Golf Course PGA of America Head Professional Doug Phares, Superintendent Josh Harty, and all sponsors and volunteers who made the event a success. —Cameron Altmayer

Special Thanks to Hometown Partner Dick’s Sporting Goods
We were scheduled to open the month of October, like we closed September, amid our Dick’s Sporting Goods Tour Championship at the iconic 4-star Omni Bedford Springs Resort on their top-ranked Pennsylvania golf course.
We take this opportunity to express our gratitude and thanks to Edward W. Stack, Executive Chairman of Dick’s Sporting Goods (DSG), for his tremendous support of the Tri-State Section and the game of golf. DSG is not only a national PGA of America partner, but also a hometown partner for the Section; Dick’s has been a staple in our area for decades and operates its headquarters just a few miles from the Section office.
The Tour Championship signifies that time of year when the end of tournament season is near. We are competing at an oasis in the desert, the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort, on their magnificent championship golf courses: Snow Mountain, Sun Moutain and The Wolf. We have another great group of returning and first-timers with us, and this 31st edition of the LVPA is sizzling.

The inaugural Western Shootout was the realization of a long-held vision by Glenmoor Golf Club’s Darci Olsen, PGA. Olsen, along with a dedicated team of PGA Jr. League coaches, worked tirelessly to create a multi-state team competition that brought young golfers together.
Although the idea had been brewing in Olsen’s mind for years, it was a chance meeting at the PGA Show in February that truly sparked the event’s formation. With support from Tara and Blake Isakson, Zach Abels and CJ Schmid, what started as a concept quickly materialized, drawing teams from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Arizona.
Held on July 26-27 at Glenmoor and TalonsCove Golf Clubs, the Western Shootout was an overwhelming success. Seventeen teams and 88 players, ages 9 to 17, participated in the two-person team competition, emulating the familiar PGA Jr. League style but with a heightened championship atmosphere. This event gave many participants a rare opportunity to experience competitive play beyond their home states.
The camaraderie and sense of community were highlights of the weekend, particularly during a western-themed dinner party that fostered friendships between players, coaches and families. The excitement peaked during the final round at TalonsCove, with support from General Manager Kareen Larson, adding a preview of Utah’s PGA Jr. League state championship. Glenmoor Golf Club teams emerged victorious in both the 17u and 13u divisions, while Idaho’s Canyon Springs finished as strong runners-up.
Looking forward, the Western Shootout is set to become an annual tradition, with plans to rotate locations across Nevada, Wyoming and Arizona. The vision is to create a growing network of events that align with the PGA Jr. League’s mission, offering young golfers more opportunities to experience the thrill of championship-level play. —Randy Dodson

The Golf Professional of the Year Award is the highest annual honor given to a WNYPGA Professional. It’s awarded for qualities of leadership, strong moral character and substantial record of service to the WNYPGA Section and the game of golf. A PGA of America Member since 1995, O’Connor started his career as a PGA Associate in the South Florida Section. After moving to various Sections and making multiple career advancements, O’Connor has been with the WNY Section since 1999 and is the GM/Owner of The Ridge Golf Club.
With the fall season now upon us, we would like to acknowledge and thank the efforts of everyone involved in the Section. On Oct. 28, the Section will invite 250 WNYPGA Professionals to Glen Oak G.C. for the Annual Fall Meeting that brings together our Section’s PGA Membership to discuss and review the golf season. —Mollie Mars
Known by his nickname, “Sponge,” Dave Spengler has a big, gregarious personality and, in his heyday, had a golf game to match it. Now he ads induction into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame to his lengthy list of accomplishments.
Spengler had shoulder surgery 15 years ago and has never quite reached the heights he attained earlier in his career.
“I started crying a little bit,” he said about his Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame induction. “It really was not something I ever thought about, or thought could happen. I was kind of in shock that it did happen. I’m still pretty stunned.”
Others inducted were Mario Tiziani, Malinda Johnson and Bob Muren.
Spengler, the 61-year-old PGA of America Head Professional at Northbrook Golf & Grill in Luxemburg, was especially good at match play. He won the WSGA Match Play Championship in 1985 and, after turning professional, won the WPGA Match Play title three times (1993, 1996, 2004). He also was a three-time WPGA Assistant Match Play Champion (1991, 1998, 2003).
“My downfall in stroke play events was, generally, there would be a train wreck or two. Once I figured that out, that’s when I got my couple of Section (stroke play) championships (in 1999 and 2002) and some high finishes in State Opens.”
Spengler played for Dennis Tiziani at the University of Wisconsin and finished second in the 1985 Ray Fischer Amateur Championship. But it was as a professional that he made his mark.
He played in the Greater Milwaukee Open eight times, missing the cut by two shots in 1991 and by one shot in 2000. He also qualified nine times for the PGA Professional Championship and had one top-10 finish, and was a seven-time U.S. Open sectional qualifier.
Spengler represented the WPGA Section in the Nelthorpe Cup matches 15 times and has the second-best winning percentage (.696) behind the late Manuel de la Torre (.710) among those with eight or more appearances. In singles, he went 3-0 against two-time State Amateur champion Bob Gregorski. —Andy Landenberger
