The latest developments in a place as steeped in history as the “Home of American Golf” — North Carolina’s Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area — only accentuate all this region has to offer.
Pinehurst Resort’s first original golf course in three decades has a distinctive home that features a name rooted in local history — Pinehurst Sandmines. Tom Doak’s Pinehurst No. 10, which officially opened on April 3, sits on land that once housed The Pit.
Pinehurst Sandmines covers more than 900 acres, most of it still wooded and undeveloped. With Pinehurst No. 10 highlighting the dramatically sloping northwest ridge of the area, the Sandmines setting offers Pinehurst the potential to expand its guests’ experiences. A variety of future developments are being considered, including an additional 18-hole golf course, a short course, clubhouse and guest cottages.
The United States Golf Association (USGA) offices associated with Golf House Pinehurst opened last December with other portions of the campus including the World Golf Hall of Fame opening this summer around the staging of the 2024 U.S. Open. It promises to be a “must-see” experience for any visitor to the area.
Golf fans from around the world will once again descend upon this globally recognized golf destination, when — following a 10-year absence — the U.S. Open returns to the Home of American Golf and venerable Pinehurst No. 2.
In late 2023, Southern Pines Golf Club unveiled the 18-hole Overhills Putting Course, designed by Kyle Franz. Kris Spence “resurrected” Woodlake Country Club in Vass, while Mike Strantz’s Tot Hill Farm in nearby Asheboro received a refurbishing under new ownership.
Off the course, retired Army veterans Brad and Jessica Halling just opened the BHAWK distillery headquarters in Southern Pines, where they are raising the American spirit and expressing gratitude for extraordinary service through two premium brands, “Sergeant’s Valor” and “Madam Colonel.” In addition, Southern Pines Brewing Company turned the old Tyson and Jones Buggy Factory, located in Carthage, into a two-story brewery and restaurant.
The Pinehurst area has a storied legacy of golf unlike any other place in the country. And it keeps getting better.
