As the CDGA turned 90, the magazine highlighted the accomplishments of the Association and golf’s icons like Tom Watson and Tiger Woods (pictured above during the 2019 BMW Championship at Medinah Country Club) from the previous nine centuries. Additionally, new initiatives such as the Bob Berry Sunshine Course took center stage and have since developed a history of their own.

The local accomplishments of the legendary Tom Watson headlined this issue, following his memorable performance in the previous year’s U.S. Open at Olympia Fields Country Club.
This spring edition spotlighted the CDGA’s rich history while also celebrating its future. A 90th anniversary piece detailed the Association’s tradition, while the Sunshine Course was readying for its debut celebration.
Similar to the Watson piece from earlier in the year, Tiger Woods’ Chicago feats comprised the bulk of this issue. The debut of the Sunshine Course and re-branding of the CDGA Foundation to the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation also took center stage.
It doesn’t get more cover-worthy than a major championship win, which downstate Oquawka native Todd Hamilton pulled off in stunning fashion at the 2004 British Open. Locally, Northwestern alum T.C. Ford’s Illinois State Amateur triumph was recapped.
The 2004 presidential election served as the backdrop for this issue’s cover piece on our nation’s leaders’ infatuation with the game. Additionally, Northwestern alum Luke Donald began a prosperous Ryder Cup career that continues to this day.
