Brad Garrett and Gina Rodriguez.
COMEDY Season 2 brings in Everybody Loves Raymond’s Brad Garrett as Duncan Rhodes, owner of the newspaper that happens to employ Nell (Gina Rodriguez), obit writer extraordinaire. He’s a deplorable man with a shark’s smile, utterly oblivious to the needs of anyone else and mightily pleased with his own wealth and power. In other words, he’s sitcom gold. The show wisely underplays its central gag—Nell, visited by ghosts, does otherworldly research into her stories— and lets a talented ensemble banter one-liners with a nice, clipped grace. No dead spots here. (Wednesdays, 8:30 p.m.)
Scene-Stealer: Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s Maya ErskineBest known for playing an endearingly uncomfortable version of her teen self on Hulu’s PEN15, Erskine shows a deeper comedic sense—a grown-up one— partnered with Donald Glover in Amazon’s series about novice spies falling in love. Erskine has a natural, slightly worried charm that may remind you of Catherine Keener. One actress you won’t think of is Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was originally cast in the role. Or even Angelina Jolie in the film. This is a performance you shouldn’t missus.
With costar Donald Glover.
Ben-Adir with Lashana Lynch.
MOVIE | Bob Marley: One LoveDRAMA Even in a long line of family-approved musician biopics, this film about the life and music of the Jamaican icon plays it too safe. Then again, if anyone is deserving of a nicely packaged tribute, it’s Marley, portrayed by the dedicated British star Kingsley Ben- Adir. At a minimum, the singer’s enduring message prevails. (In theaters, PG-13)
