Regardless of your spiritual leanings, there’s no debate that this time of year is inextricably linked to illumination. Advent wreaths, menorahs, and kinaras offer candlelit reminders of faith and community, while Christmas trees, the Times Square Ball, and the glowing nose of a resilient, misfit reindeer—not to mention glorious leg lamps—are more secular symbols of a celebratory season. Whether metaphorical or real, we’re all seeking a little bit of light in the darkness at the end of each year.
Not unlike many families, the Causers traditionally venture out into the December night to partake in the holiday spirit. Whether it’s enjoying the majesty of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City, capacity crowds beholding the majestic glow of Disney World’s Cinderella Castle, the family-friendliness of Hersheypark’s Christmas Candylane, stepping into Ralphie Parker’s boots at the House from A Christmas Story, the nostalgic simplicity of New Jersey’s Storybook Land, or just cruising at night with a mug of hot chocolate viewing neighborhood homes, we are guided by the lights.
Famed psychiatrist Lucy Van Pelt once stated, “We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big Eastern syndicate, you know.” But despite being bludgeoned with retailers’ holiday gift-giving sledgehammer year after year, I cannot tell you what gifts I gave or received when I was five, 10, or even 20 years old. But I can recall my exact age, the people I was with, and the vivid memories of each of those aforementioned family holiday outings. In the end, it’s not the presents we unwrap but the moments we share that are illuminated with warmth and wonder, inspiring us with a hopefulness that carries us into the new year. Yes, of all the Charlie Browns in the world, I may be the Charlie Browniest.
Here’s wishing you and yours the happiest of holiday seasons!
