Arguably some of the best Met area golfers in one photo – Charles Whitehead, Willie Turnesa, Ray Billows, and Frank Strafaci (left to right) all pose for a picture on the putting green at the 1936 U.S. Amateur at Garden City Golf Club on Long Island. Charles Whitehead captured five straight N.J. Amateur Championships from 1936 to 1942 as well as the New Jersey Open in 1942. Frank Strafaci won the Met Amateur seven times and is regarded as one of Brooklyn's best golfers. The youngest of the seven Turnesa brothers who all became golf professionals, Willie Turnesa won the 1938 and 1948 U.S. Amateurs as well as the 1947 British Amateur. “Willie the Wedge” lost to the “Cinderella Kid”(Billows) in the finals of the 1940 New York State Golf Association Men’s Amateur at Onondaga Golf & Country Club in the upstate, one of seven N.Y. men’s amateurs Billows won.
