Joseph Deraney capped a memorable year Saturday with a four-stroke victory at the Stocker Cup in Carmel, Calif.
Deraney (above), of Belden, Miss., shot 6-under-par 66 in the final round at The Preserve Golf Club, one stroke off the tournament record, to come from behind first- and second-round leader Tug Maude. Deraney posted 10-under 206 in winning the mid-amateur tournament for the second time.
Maude, an Atlanta resident, began the final-round with a three-stroke lead. He gamely clung to the lead as Deraney made four birdies on the front nine, eagled the 13th hole and birdied the 15th. But Maude played the final five holes in 5-over par, handing the title to Deraney.
Maude, who closed with 73, finished T2 with Philip Lee of Nashville, Tenn., at 6-under 210. Lee tied the tournament record with a closing 65. Lee and partner Dan Crockett won the team gross event at 20-under par.
Billy Mitchell of Atlanta and Bryan Hoops of Chandler, Ariz., shared the Tatum Cup, awarded to the low player age 50 and older.
Prior to winning the Stocker Cup, Deraney was runner-up at the U.S. Mid-Amateur and successfully defended his Canadian Mid-Amateur title. A stay-at-home father, he also won the Mississippi Amateur and finished second at the Gasparilla Invitational and the Carlton Woods Invitational.
