A team of amateurs representing the Metropolitan Golf Association came from behind last Wednesday to defeat a Golfing Union of Ireland squad, 6½-5½, in the 15th Gov. Hugh L. Carey Challenge Cup in Paramus, N.J.
The MGA trailed the GUI, 4-2, heading into Wednesday’s singles matches at Arcola Country Club, but the MGA completed its comeback when Trevor Randolph made 12-foot bogey putt on the 18th hole of the anchor match and the GUI’s Rowan Lester missed an 8-foot par putt that would have halved the match and forged an overall tie. The victory was the MGA’s first in the biennial affair since 2013.
"These international competitions mean so much to me personally," said Randolph, who has competed on six international teams for the MGA. "To be involved with getting the Carey Cup to come to Arcola and then to have it end that way is certainly really special to me and is something I won't forget."
Brad Tilley, who recently won the New York State Mid-Amateur, Westchester Mid-Amateur and MGA Mid-Amateur in a 10-day span, scored the MGA’s first singles point, defeating Conor Purcell, who played for Great Britain & Ireland in this year’s Walker Cup, 8 and 7.
The MGA’s Thomas La Morte and James Nicholas also scored victories against Walker Cup players, with La Morte defeating Caolan Rafferty, 6 and 4, and Nicholas topping James Sugrue – who is also the reigning British Amateur champion – 2 up.
“They put out their three Walker Cup players first,” said Tod Pike, the MGA captain. ”But once we got through the first two of those three, we knew that the game was on."
Peter O’Keeffe was the only GUI player to prevail in singles, defeating Darin Goldstein, 2 and 1. The MGA’s Joe Saladino halved his match with the GUI’s Robert Brazill.
The GUI leads the series, 8-5-2.
