George Wendt, best known for playing the lovable Norm Peterson on Cheers, died at age 76 on May 20, 32 years to the day of the sitcom's finale airing. Went "died peacefully in his sleep while at home," according to his rep, who remembered the actor as a "doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him.'
After years of minor roles on TV series like M*A*S*H and Taxi, the Chicago native, whose sister Kathy is the mother of actor Jason Sudeikis, had his breakthrough with Cheers in 1982. Went, who later secured another spot in pop-culture history as part of Saturday Night Live's "Da Bears" sketches, appeared in all 275 episodes of the sitcom. "For 11 years America waited for him to walk into a bar every Thursday night and say something funny, and they just knew he wouldn't disappoint," costar Kelsey Grammer said on Gayle King's SiriusXM radio show after news of Wendt's death broke. "He was extraordinary.". "He was extraordinary."
