Picking the correct clubs to use from different situations around the green can be difficult and stressful. It’s important to know the carry distances (the yardage from point of impact to point of landing) of the specific clubs, and more importantly, how much you can depend on the ball to spin or roll out.
Try this simple visualization tip to help you pick the correct shot and club:
1) Visualize your “50-yard line” or the halfway point between you and the hole.
2) Ask yourself, “Do I need to fly it farther than halfway, or can I hit a safer shot that may be lower and runs to the hole?”
3) If you MUST fly the ball farther than halfway, that’s typically going to mean using a 58- or 60-degree wedge. Conversely, if you want to fly the ball shorter than halfway, consider choosing a pitching wedge or even a 9-iron. The basic halfway pitch would generally be played with a 54- or 56-degree wedge.
Next time you miss the green, follow this simple formula to take the stress off your short game and help you pick the correct shot for the correct situation!
