The golfing communities of Texas and Oklahoma are set to converge this fall in an exciting new event as the Texas Golf Association (TGA) and the Oklahoma Golf Association (OGA) join forces to host the inaugural Red River Cup Matches. Scheduled for November 20-21, the tournament promises two days of exhilarating competition at The Territory Golf & Country Club in Duncan, Okla.
The tournament will showcase the best golfing talent from both states, featuring a captivating blend of Four-Ball Matches on day one and Singles Matches on day two. This unique format will not only highlight individual skills but also foster camaraderie and teamwork among participants.
A distinguishing aspect of the new event is the diverse composition of the teams. Each team will be comprised of eight male mid-amateurs, six male senior amateurs, and four women mid-amateurs, ensuring representation across various demographics within the two golfing communities.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Oklahoma Golf Association for this exciting venture,” said Kevin Porter, TGA Director of Competitions for North Texas. “This tournament celebrates the rich golfing heritage of our respective states while also embodying the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that guides the game of golf.”
Opened for play in 2003, The Territory Golf & Country Club was designed by Randy Heckenkemper and pays homage to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Set on 640 acres of scenic countryside, the dramatic layout features natural 100-foot elevation changes, numerous rock outcroppings, mature oak trees, and Stagestand Creek meandering throughout the property.
“We are excited to collaborate with our friends from the Texas Golf Association. This competition builds on the inherit rivalry that is OU/Texas, but also brings both state organizations closer together,” said Kevin Stanton, OGA Executive Director. “We have already received questions from our players on how to make the team, so the excitement is out there. We are also ecstatic that a great venue like The Territory Golf & Country Club has agreed to be the first host. It is one of our best facilities in southern Oklahoma and should present quite a challenge to both teams. “
Players will attain positions on their respective teams by earning performance points for top finishes in designated tournaments held throughout the year. This competitive pathway emphasizes skill, dedication, and consistent performance on the golf course, which will ensure the event features the best players from each state.
The makeup of the Texas Team will be determined as follows: top six mid-amateurs from State Player of the Year Standings, top mid-amateur from North Regional Player of the Year Standings, top mid-amateur from South Regional Player of the Year Standings, top six seniors from State Senior Player of the Year Standings, top three women’s mid-amateurs from Women’s Player of the Year Standings, and Player of the Year from Women’s Senior Player of the Year Standings.
