With the official start of summer right around the corner, thoughts are likely turning to spending long, relaxing days playing golf. If those ambitions also include a desire to get away for a day or two (or longer) and tee it up on a new course in peaceful surroundings, then now is the time to add the 2024 Texas Shamble to your itinerary.
The annual Texas Shamble is the flagship event of the TGA Foundation’s Fun Golf Series and combines good-natured competition with an emphasis on the social aspects of the game, like enjoying the chance to play a great golf course and making new friends. It is a wonderful opportunity for players of all ages and abilities from across the state to get together in one place for a three-day event filled with fun, food, and golf.
This year’s Texas Shamble will be played August 23-25 at the beautiful Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort in Boerne. The event is open to TGA members only and will feature 54 two-person teams competing in men’s, women’s, and mixed team flights, each with gross and net divisions. The format is a two-person shamble with handicaps, as well as senior tees for players aged 65 and older. In a two-person shamble format, both players hit a tee shot, select the best one and play their own ball from that point until the ball is holed. The team records the better of the two scores as the team score for each hole.
Kelly Kilgo, Managing Director of TGA Foundation/Outreach, is thrilled to see that the event has become a much-anticipated getaway for many teams.
“When we first started the Texas Shamble back in 2016, our goal was to establish a fun, multiday event for TGA members where they could enjoy some friendly competition on the course, but also create lasting memories off the course,” Kilgo said. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see our members really embrace what the Texas Shamble is all about, and just how much they enjoy the opportunity to be able to participate in an event like this.”
Having such a fantastic host venue as Tapatio Springs has certainly played an important role in the success of the Texas Shamble.
Surrounded by towering oak trees, limestone bluffs and waterways, Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort offers guests a unique experience with sophisticated lodging accommodations in 111 newly renovated rooms, refined and casual dining options, fitness center, heated adult and resort pools with jacuzzi, and hike and bike trails.
The 18-hole championship golf course at Tapatio Springs opened in 1981 and was originally designed by Bill Johnston. In the mid-2010s, renowned architect Tripp Davis oversaw a comprehensive renovation project, which included relocating and reshaping tees, fairways, greens, and bunkers. The stunning transformation has earned rave reviews from golfers for its scenic beauty, great variety of holes, and excellent conditioning. The par-72 layout has six sets of tees ranging in length from 6,477 yards to 4,828 yards to provide players of every level with a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Even though August is still two months away, it’s not too early to start making travel plans. Registration for this year’s Texas Shamble will open at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 24 and will close when the maximum field limit of 54 teams has been reached. Be sure to mark your calendar so you don’t miss out on the chance to be a part of an unforgettable weekend.
