The TGA was founded in 1906 and serves as the governing body for amateur golf in Texas, responsible for leading, growing and supporting the game at all levels of play.
By continually investing in a wide range of programs, services and initiatives that help enhance the game and encourage increased participation, the TGA is now one of the largest and most respected golf associations in the country, representing over 170,000 individual members and more than 580 member clubs.
The TGA is committed to its ongoing responsibilities by ensuring that substantial assets and the most experienced staff are in place to meet the current and future needs of its membership.
As has been proven time and again over the years, though, the most important resource the TGA has by far is its dedicated volunteers. These enthusiasts donate their time and experience out of a love for the game and a desire to give something back. Their continued efforts have a vast impact on the successful implementation and administration of the many functions of the TGA.
The volunteers working with the TGA are a welcoming and inclusive group of passionate golfers who enjoy passing on their accumulated knowledge to others. If being a part of this incredible team sounds like a rewarding experience, there are two TGA volunteer paths to choose from, Course Rating and Championship Administration, and are outlined below:
Course Rating
Course Rating Volunteers are assigned to a course rating team in their geographic area. There are nine separate course rating regions in the state. An on-site course rating involves first accurately measuring each hole, and then the obstacles and challenges that affect playing difficulty are evaluated in accordance with established standards. The team may play the course after the rating is completed to gain greater insight from a playing perspective, and to clarify any doubts or questions that may have come up on specific holes or shots.
Championship Administration
Championship Administration Volunteers assist in conducting over 300 days of competition each year, including the TGA’s 20 regional and statewide championships, major college tournaments, as well as 75-plus days of TGA and USGA qualifying. Depending on previous experience and/or knowledge of the Rules of Golf, volunteers may serve in one of several roles, including as General Volunteers, Referees, or Rules Committee Members.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the TGA, and their service helps make golf more enjoyable for all, no matter what stage they are at in the game. To learn more about these volunteer opportunities and how to get started, click here.
