By Brian R. Mahoney, Executive Director/CEO
“Practice the discipline of gratitude” is a phrase a dear friend, the late Rob Bluestone, would say regularly – and a discipline I will strive to practice for the rest of my life.
Like Rob, whose contributions to the MGA were extraordinary, my first mentors at the MGA were Jay Mottola and Gene Westmoreland – both widely regarded as the G.O.A.T.s of golf administration. Gene was my boss at the time and was a tremendous leader of our championship program for more than three decades. Gene led with a coaching style: a former basketball player and coach, he developed his assistants by sharing perspectives, teaching MGA principles and philosophies, and leading by example. Gene was exceptional in conveying appreciation to volunteers, staff, and member clubs alike.
Gene taught me early on that building trusted relationships with clubs and their leaders was essential for the MGA and its programs to succeed. We run approximately 125 events each season – championships, fundraisers, clinics, and more – across more than 330 member clubs within the three states we serve. That means, on average, we visit a club once every three seasons. Some clubs we rarely visit for various reasons, meaning a percentage of clubs carry a greater burden.
Giving back is a major part of the Met Area golf culture. Our clubs represent the greatest collection of tradition, architecture, and influence in the world. They care deeply about advancing the game, supporting the fraternity of golf, and ensuring Met Area organizations remain healthy and vibrant. After all, the stronger the MGA, the better for our clubs and the consumers we all serve.
On behalf of Rob, Gene, and everyone at the MGA – past and present – I want to express my most sincere thanks to all the Met Area clubs and courses that believe in giving back, sharing their home, and contributing to the rich history that makes MGA-land so special. As we head into the summer season, we’re grateful every day for the facilities that welcome us with open arms and support all that we do. There are so many individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a successful event, and we’re lucky that we benefit from the tremendous efforts of all involved.
To whom much is given, much is required. We take our responsibility to represent our clubs very seriously. We exist because of – and for – our clubs.
Thank you for your partnership and your support.
Yours in golf,
