When I became president, my husband, David, and our two sons supported the decision to sell our home in Westminster and move into the President’s House here on campus. They understood that assuming a college presidency would be a family affair, and one that extended far beyond the members of our immediate family.
In over 20 years as members of the McDaniel community, we have built deep ties between our family and many of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni who have also called the Hill home. Now in our third year living on campus, we remain grateful for the way this community bond continues to be strengthened as together we celebrate achievements, support one another in difficult times, and share in the joy of continual growth and learning together.
This issue is dedicated to the impact of that experience: the incredible things that come from nurturing our college family. For Alum of the Year Don Rembert ’61, McDaniel family includes not only his wife, Judy Ellis Rembert ’60, whom he met here, but also former athletic director, head football coach, and “surrogate father” Bob Waldorf. Also featured in this issue are Erika Herron Hall ’99 and sisters Sharon Head ’88 and Sue Head Conklin ’94, who, along with their families, share with us what it means to build a legacy through an institution of higher learning and create a home base that connects many generations. Another multigenerational family, the Butlers, revisit their Green Terror football experience as a family tradition.
It is a gift for me to lead an institution committed to fostering a warm and welcoming culture where individuals can come together in life-changing ways. Thank you for all you do to help make the Hill such a special place to learn, live, and work.
Sincerely,
President Julia Jasken
