Life after college
Tom Baugher ’79 and Patrice John Baugher still call Fort Wayne, Indiana, home but with both recently retired, they have enjoyed traveling to a lot of other places. In 2023, they spent 10 days in Germany, Italy, and Austria celebrating their 43rd wedding anniversary. They also enjoyed time at the beach with family in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, and traveled back to Maryland for family celebrations where they had an amazing crab cake at Rock Salt in Westminster, Maryland. Patrice says that 2024 has them taking more trips. First to Naples, Florida, for several weeks in March, then a week in Chicago in June, and spending most of the summer at nearby Lakes Webster and Wawasee where they keep their boats.
Kim Kost Berliant greets everyone from Cary, North Carolina, her official home! She and her husband, Allan, arrived there in 2019 when their grandson was born and thought they would try it out. They love it! Their involvement in various volunteer activities has kept them engaged and they are grateful for several friend groups and, of course, pickleball! Kim always likes seeing the updates from our classmates and getting travel tips — they have taken several of the same cruises mentioned!
Kathi Hill retired from the practice of law in 2017 and therefore missed the reinvention of the practice of law, in the era of lockdowns and post-lockdowns. She says quitting while you love what you do seems a bit wrongheaded, but she wanted memories of a great career untainted. Her theory is that if you are even a tiny bit curious about the world around you, there are a million very cool things to experience that have yet to be. Do them now! We are not going to get any younger, nor really richer, not a bunch healthier, and without crystal balls of longevity, if not now, when? Kathi taught at McDaniel in the daylight full time for several years and finished up her last class / last semester there, too. She says it is sometimes a struggle squeezing in needed time between new adventures, to while away time (our most precious commodity) with friends and family, who really make up the story of her life. She is surprised that we find ourselves in the middle of the seventh decade of our lives already! She occasionally sees her roomie, Sue Fowler Katz, and they do spend a few days together most years of late, but not nearly enough! It makes her realize how fast this ride is! She loves living at the beach and in her community of Bay Forest in Ocean View, Delaware. It is very cool that at this point in her life, she has made incredible new friends. Who knew that these friendships would be forged now, and mean so much? She loves to travel. Looking into the eyes of mountain gorillas in Rwanda and seeing that kindred spirit looking back has to be one of the highlights of her life: “So connected, no denying it. Watching them laugh and play and fight and be so like us takes your breath away.” She loves wildlife, including snow leopards that she waited eight hours to catch a glimpse of. Blue-footed boobies and Darwin’s finches were amazing to see in person!
Phyllis Landry and her husband moved to Church Hill, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore in the fall of 2021. Smaller house, smaller yard, fewer possessions but more of what they love the most: time with family, time to travel, time in the garden, and cooking together. Watching their 3-year-old granddaughter Hazel two or three days a week since she was an infant brings Phyllis such joy, and in March they welcomed her sister to the world. Joy times two! Life on the shore is good and Phyllis is back where she belongs.
John Patrick and Nancy Paulsen Patrick ’78 are the proud grandparents of three as Popa with an “o” and Grandmom. They enjoy spending as much time as they can with them. They still live on Kent Island, Maryland, on Kirwan Creek with crabbing and fishing and a spectacular view of ducks, geese, sunrises, and sunsets. This past spring, they added a new 24-foot piece of fiberglass to the lift on the pier. John is still the chief operating officer at Liberty Petroleum. They have been busy with some home renovations and travel and are looking forward to an upcoming family vacation with all the kids and grandchildren.
Steve Timchula writes that he has fully retired from the practice of law. He and his wife, Holly, are enjoying trips of interest as long as they are healthy enough to travel. They have been to Northern and Southern France, the Rhine River, the Danube, Iceland, Sweden, Poland, and Germany, and are set to go to New Zealand, Australia, Italy, the U.K., and Norway. All of this is not considering the trips to other cities for Ravens games. He now has more time (other than Ravens games and events) for his alter-ego, Major Offense, as he has been involved in charities through the Ravens Roost in Westminster, including the Polar Bear Plunge and the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway by Carroll Food Sunday. He had a chance to fly to Los Angeles and participate in an Apple video with other enthusiastic fans prior to the Super Bowl in 2023 and had a trip to New Orleans for a shoot with a Bengals fan on Emeril Lagasse’s show this year.
Mike Cantrell and I are doing well. He continues with the practice of law and I with the practice of psychiatry. We are not quite ready to retire — but some of you make it sound quite tempting. By the time this comes out, I imagine we will be planning a 45th Reunion. Imagine that!
