NEWS FROM THE TOUR VANS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY GOLF PRIDE, THE #1 GRIP ON TOUR
The golf world is accustomed to seeing the usual suspects when it comes to the winner’s golf ball on tour each week – Titleist Pro V1, TaylorMade TP5, Srixon Z-Star …
In the last month, a Maxfli ball has been raised in a PGA Tour winner’s hand twice as Ben Griffin, the reborn brand’s lone tour ambassador, won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial using a Maxfli Tour X ball. It took world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to keep Griffin from winning again at the Memorial Tournament.
Maxfli’s previous tour win before Griffin was in 2003.
It’s a fitting partnership since both Griffin and Maxfli checked out of the game before enjoying career revivals. Griffin went into mortgage loan banking before giving professional golf another try and Maxfli was recovered from the dustbin when Dick’s Sporting Goods bought the name in 2008.
In 2019 it introduced the Maxfli Tour and Tour X balls that proved to be a performance leap for a vintage brand that dates back to 1922. The Maxfli balls retail for $40 per dozen at Dick’s. Its first big-name ambassador was the LPGA’s Lexi Thompson. “The Maxfli Tour ball exceeded my expectations,” Thompson said when she signed on at the start of 2024. “The ball fits my game extremely well, increasing my ball speed without sacrificing control.”
After speaking with Thompson about it, Griffin soon joined the Maxfli family along with PGA Tour Champions player Fred Funk. With two tour wins in the span of five weeks, Griffin gives credibility to Maxfli’s place among the big names.
“It’s pretty cool,” Griffin told Golf Magazine last month. “You know, ever since I first got started with Maxfli, this has been a big part of the goal. I always had a lot of trust in the brand. I know, at the time, there weren’t a lot of people who necessarily did have trust, especially at the core level. But after I went through all the testing and everything, I realized that this is a product that deserves to be at the tour level and deserves a spot at the top.”
In the Zurich team event, Griffin’s partner Andrew Novak agreed to use Griffin’s Maxfli Tour X during the alternate-shot rounds after testing it during the week of the Masters. Novak played “worst ball” using it in a practice round to check it out.
“He texted me, and was like, ‘Yeah, I’m 3-under worst ball at Sea Island using your Maxfli, so I think we’re going to use the Maxfli,’” Griffin told Golf.
Meanwhile, while Max Homa continues to try to regain his old form he hasn’t abandoned his passion for his favorite Mexican-style restaurant. At the Memorial Tournament, Homa sported a burrito-inspired Chipotle head cover designed by Cobra on his DS-Adapt LS driver.
“Cobra has always been a leader in making the game of golf more approachable, and this collaboration is no different,” said Homa. “Partnering with Cobra and Chipotle to bring my two favorite things together has been a lot of fun. We wanted to create something that speaks to golf’s new generation: entertaining, bold and personal.”
Homa gave away 250 free burrito head covers via his Instagram account to his followers on Tuesday before the Memorial Tournament. Fans can purchase the limited-edition head cover and golf ball shag bag exclusively at cobragolf.com.
