PRESENTING
MEN’S SENIOR AMATEUR
FIRST TEAM
Robert Funk
Canyon Lake, California
Winner: Carlton Woods Senior Invitational
Winner: GOLFWEEK Senior Amateur
Top 5: Canadian Senior Amateur
Funk won two respectable senior events with the Carlton Woods Senior and Golfweek Senior Am titles. He also had top-10 finishes in the Canadian Senior, Morrison Cup, Kelly Cup and a couple of local Southern California championships plus an appearance in the U.S. Senior Open.
Doug Hanzel
Savannah, Georgia
Winner: National Senior Amateur Hall of Fame
Runner-up: U.S. Senior Amateur
Winner: Georgia Senior Amateur
Well into his 60s, Hanzel doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. He picked up a big four-shot victory in the National Senior Amateur Hall of Fame, nearly won the U.S. Senior Amateur and packed his calendar with top-10 finishes in just about every event he played.
Stephen Jensen
England
Winner: English Senior Amateur
Top 5: R&A Senior Amateur
Quarterfinalist: U.S. Senior Amateur
You have to give Jensen considerable applause for traveling to important senior events in a variety of countries. He won the English Senior Am as well as being top five in the R&A Senior, Irish Senior and Scottish Senior. A quarterfinals appearance in the U.S. Senior Am proved that his success isn’t a fluke.
Rupert Kellock
Winner: Scandinavian Seniors Open Amateur
Semifinalist: Crump Cup
Top 5: European Seniors’ Championship
Similar to with Jensen, we thought Kellock fully earned first-team honors because of his performance in a variety of top-tier international tournaments. He played well in the R&A Senior Am, made match play in the U.S. Senior Am and collected nine top-10 finishes in events that had a field strength of 30 or higher. He played in Sweden, Spain, the U.S., England, Estonia, Scotland and Ireland in order to do that.
MILES McCONNELL
Tampa, Florida
Winner: GOLFWEEK Player of the Year Classic
It was a breakout year for McConnell, who once played PGA Tour Canada and assorted mini-tours for more than a decade. He had a big national win early in the calendar at the Golfweek Player of the Year Classic before rattling off top-five results in the Jones Cup Senior and R&A Senior. Qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open and earning a trip to the quarterfinals in the U.S. Senior Am rounded out the year.
MIKE McCOY
WEST DES MOINES, IOWA
WINNER: R&A SENIOR AMATEUR
WINNER: FLORIDA SENIOR AMATEUR
RUNNER-UP: TRANS-MISS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Since a lackluster 2019 and an injury-plagued 2020, McCoy has returned to being the player we have been so accustomed to seeing. Wins at the R&A Senior Amateur (by seven strokes, no less) and Florida Senior highlighted a season that included runners-up in the Coleman Senior, Trans-Miss Senior and Crump. He also reached match play in the U.S. Mid-Am and U.S. Senior Am, an exceedingly rare feat for a senior am.
Bob Royak
Alpharetta, Georgia
Winner: Coleman Senior Invitational
Semifinalist: U.S. Senior Amateur
Runner-up: International Senior Championship
It was another superb year for Royak. His Coleman Senior win leads a long résumé that includes runner-up finishes in the Chanticleer and International. A U.S. Senior Am semifinal appearance and top-five finishes in the National Senior Am Hall of Fame, Crump Cup and Golfweek Player of the Year Classic make this another satisfying campaign.
Rusty Strawn
McDONOUGH, GEORGIA
Winner: U.S. Senior Amateur
Winner: Trans-Miss Senior Championship
Winner: Canadian Senior Amateur
Our men’s amateur of the year will never forget 2022. Not only did he win the U.S. Senior Amateur, Canadian Senior, Trans-Miss Senior and the Florida Senior Azalea, but Strawn had at least five other chances to win prominent senior events. It was a dominant year by all metrics.
Matthew Sughrue
Arlington, Virginia
Winner: Jones Cup Senior Invitational
Runner-up: GOLFWEEK Player of the Year Classic
Runner-up: Society of Seniors Spring Classic
Sughrue didn’t play as many events as most players on this list, but he made every start count. He won the Jones Cup Senior – which had a field strength almost identical to that of the U.S. Senior Am – in addition to top-10 finishes in the Golfweek Player of the Year Classic, SOS Spring Classic, Coleman Senior, R&A Senior, U.S. Senior Am and Crump Cup. That’s playing some outstanding golf when it mattered.
Kevin VandenBerg
Naples, Florida
Winner: Senior Porter Cup
Winner: Heron Creek National Senior Invitational
Top 5: Jones Cup Senior Invitational
VandenBerg won three WAGR-counting events of moderate field strength, but it didn’t just come down to the wins. There were 10 events in which he earned more than four WAGR points, including high finishes in prominent national events such as the Jones Cup Senior, SOS Senior Masters, National Senior Amateur Hall of Fame and Florida Senior Azalea.
