Kelsey Jo Holsten, PGA,Golf Shop Manager,Monterey Peninsula Country Club,Pebble Beach, California
For Kelsey Jo Holsten, emotion has no place in the buying process. As the PGA of America Golf Shop Manager at Monterey Peninsula Country Club (pictured) in Pebble Beach, California, she relies on hard data to make purchasing decisions, ensuring that every product in the shop serves both the members and the bottom line.
“My reps say I have the most data of anyone they know,” Holsten says. “I track top movers in each category, how many units sell per month, and how many were sold at a discount. It’s about seeing the full picture – selling 200 units looks great until you realize 100 were discounted.”
Holsten’s data-driven approach allows her to fine-tune product selection. After noticing frequent returns on a women’s pant due to fraying, she analyzed sales and identified a vest from the same brand that consistently performed well. “I told the rep we wouldn’t carry the pants anymore but would stock the vest in every color. They sold out,” she explains. “Adjusting orders based on what’s actually selling – rather than what we think will sell – makes all the difference.”
Since arriving in 2020, Holsten has worked to refine the shop’s product mix, eliminating underperforming vendors and aligning inventory with member preferences. By breaking down sell-through rates and comparing brands, she provides reps with clear insights into how their products stack up.
“A lot of reps appreciate the transparency, and it has helped us grow our business,” Holsten says. “At the end of the day, the goal is simple – be better as an operation. Data gives us the answers we need to keep improving.”
Tom Beeler, PGA Master Professional & General Manager,Youghiogheny Country Club,McKeesport, Pennsylvania
At Youghiogheny Country Club in McKees port, Penn sylvania, PGA of America General Manager Tom Beeler has made it a priority to build a strong relationship with the local volunteer fire departments that provide emergency services to the club.
“Having a great relationship with them is vital,” says Beeler, the 2019 Tri-State PGA Section Professional of the Year. “We invite them to play a few times a year and host an annual fundraising tournament, but our connection goes beyond just golf.”
This partnership has provided tangible benefits for both the club and first responders. Every two years, a representative from the Blaine Hill Volunteer Fire Department certifies or re-certifies the club’s staff in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver – essential skills for a hospitality-driven business. Furthermore, when the club needs aerial repairs, the fire department brings over a ladder truck, often assisting in the process to ensure safety.
The club also supports fundraising efforts for the fire department, providing golf equipment for raffles and charity events, while making direct donations when the department lends a hand.
“It’s a win-win,” Beeler explains. “We’re strengthening our community ties, ensuring our staff is well-trained and supporting the people who help keep us safe.”
By fostering relationships with first responders, Beeler has created a partnership that benefits both his facility and the local community – a model that can be replicated at clubs everywhere.
