Nearly two decades removed from a more-than-30-year tenure as host of the Western Amateur, Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan is again set to welcome top amateurs from around the world when the inaugural Jim DeLapa Collegiate is contested Sept. 27-29.
Hosted by Central Michigan University and coach Kevin Jennings, a former Point O’ Woods caddie, the premier collegiate event will feature 15 teams from California to Florida and beyond, including local programs in Northern Illinois and Chicago State. After hosting more Western Amateurs than any other facility in the country, the club has seen the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Andy North, Ben Crenshaw and more hoist hardware on its grounds. Now, the list of champions will continue to grow with the event readying for four-consecutive years at the southwest Michigan establishment. The goal for the event is to carry on the club’s lasting legacy within the world of amateur golf, while creating new milestones.
The tournament’s three days will begin with practice rounds, a Collegiate-Alumni Event and opening ceremonies on Saturday, Sept. 27. Day two will feature 36 holes of competition beginning at 9 a.m. before the final 18 holes on Monday, Sept. 29. All events are open to the public free of charge. Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals, Whirlpool Foundation, Stifel, Jan Craig Headcovers, Wilson Golf and Good Boy Vodka are all serving as sponsors for the first playing of the Jim DeLapa Collegiate.
