Superintendent Spotlight:
What started as a normal shift as a waiter at Spag’s Bar & Grill in Williamston, Michigan ended up being a career-defining evening for Adam Edick.
Edick, now the golf course superintendent at Pine Meadow Golf Club in Mundelein, had moved to East Lansing from his hometown of Muskegon, Michigan, to “hang out with his buddies” who were attending Michigan State. On the serendipitous evening at Spag’s, he struck up a conversation with the superintendent at Eldorado Golf Course, a nearby 27-hole, family-owned facility. By the end of the shift, he had been offered a job.
“He said he needed someone on the grounds,” recalled Edick.
Shortly after joining the grounds crew, Edick “caught the itch” and decided to pursue a career in turfgrass. He completed Michigan State’s two-year degree program and was hired at Knollwood Club in Lake Forest as an assistant superintendent to Drew Barnett.
Following three years there, which included being part of an extensive renovation project, Edick took his first head role at Deerpath Golf Course. The lessons learned at Knollwood set him up for success in his maiden superintendent position.
“I owe pretty much everything that I know to [Barnett] and my time at Knollwood,” said Edick. “It was a great place to start.”
After a season at Deerpath, Edick moved to his current position at Pine Meadow in April of 2025. With one full season under his belt at the Jemsek Family-owned facility, Edick is striving to institute the private club conditioning he practiced at Knollwood.
“The back nine might have some of the best holes in the area,” Edick said.
