The pandemic made it clear to many of us how difficult enduring prolonged isolation can be. For many of our community members, including seniors, those with disabilities, and those without transportation, being cut off from print materials is an ongoing issue. As much as we would love to welcome every person into a physical library, sometimes that doesn’t work. So learning how to access DPL’s digital materials can be a lifesaver. My mother, a woman with limited mobility in her 70s, was able to read over 100 titles last year because she has learned to navigate Libby, the platform that allows users to checkout and download eBooks.
There are numerous advantages to reading eBooks. There’s the opportunity to start something immediately, without having to go anywhere or wait until the library reopens. Finish one book and want to start the next in the series? You may be able to do so without putting on shoes or scouring a shelf. Maybe you’re on vacation and have an unexpected layover. eBooks are there to fill that gap. Titles return automatically, so you never have to worry about dropping something off on time in our book drops. The wait times for eBooks vary from those of our physical collections, meaning they might be available sooner! And you can also change the font style and size, making it easier to read depending on your eyesight, learning disabilities, or lighting situation.
Never had an eBook and unsure where to start? Try downloading the Libby app and entering your DPL library card number. Have you done that part but are still confused? Stop by a branch or give us a call. We’re here to help. You’re welcome to bring a device in if you have one (like a phone, tablet, or kindle) or give us a call from home and let us try and troubleshoot with you. Our goal at the library is to connect you with resources – but the format of that resource is up to you. A digital book is not worth less than a physical one, and there are a plethora of options awaiting you if you can take the time to look for them.
