Consumers Energy is making a strong commitment and taking action to meet it
JACKSON—The Consumers Energy Foundation, Consumers Energy’s charitable arm, will contribute $1.5 million this year to support projects to build up the planet, people and prosperity in the state.
Most recently, it contributed a total of $500,000 for three projects expected to significantly benefit the state’s environment through the Foundation’s new Planet Awards.
The Michigan Nature Association, Conservation Resource Alliance and Michigan United Conservation Clubs were the first recipients of grants that are designed to preserve, restore and protect Michigan’s natural resources.
“Consumers Energy [is committed] to people, the planet and Michigan’s prosperity,” said Patti Poppe, the utility’s president and CEO. “Our Planet Awards represent that commitment in action. We are excited to support these three projects as we all work together to preserve Michigan’s natural beauty.”
The Michigan Nature Association received $250,000 for its “Protecting Habitat Today for People and Wildlife Tomorrow” project. The project will protect, restore and enhance 575 acres of critical habitat for rare, threatened and endangered plants and animals in eight counties across the state.
Conservation Resource Alliance received $150,000 for its “Wild Roots” initiative, which seeks to plant 100,000 native Michigan trees over the next five years. The new trees will fortify forested watersheds in the northern part of the state, reduce water runoff by nearly 8 million gallons and provide seed stocks for future forestation.
Finally, Michigan United Conservation Clubs was the recipient of $100,000 for its new “On the Water” program, which will support stream and riverbed cleanups, plus education and outreach to help connect residents with the state’s waterways.
Consumers Energy Foundation will allocate the remaining $1 million in grants for its People and Prosperity awards throughout the rest of 2019, following requests for proposals.
