The Vancouver Aquarium—home to incredible ocean species and amazing aquatic life, totaling 70,000 animals in all—was facing tough times last fall because of financial strain stemming from its temporary closure due to COVID-19. On top of this, the natural gas boilers used to heat its Amazon exhibit, aqua center and shark tanks needed to be replaced.
FortisBC couldn’t do anything about the pandemic, but it could help with updating the equipment. The province’s leading energy solutions provider stepped forward to donate replacement high-efficiency natural gas boilers to heat the animal habitats.
The aquarium, Canada’s largest, is receiving further support through financial incentives for different projects, such as custom-designed retrofits and heat recovery, which come with participating in FortisBC’s energy efficiency programs.
“FortisBC recognizes the value that the Vancouver Aquarium brings to the community, and we are supporting them by donating natural gas boilers,” Jason Wolfe, director, energy solutions at FortisBC, told American Gas. “Once the newer boilers are installed, the aquarium can look forward to several years of reliable, affordable and low-emissions heating for its animal habitats.” —Carolyn Kimmel
